More fun happenings in the Middle East.

Will we now get floods of Turkish migrants?

Turkey army group announces takeover on TV

An army group in Turkey says it has taken over the country, with soldiers at strategic points in Istanbul and jets flying low in the capital, Ankara.

A statement read on TV said a "peace council" now ran the country and there was a curfew and martial law.

It is unclear who the army group is. There are reports some senior army officials have been detained.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would overcome what he called an uprising by a minority.

He told CNN Turk by mobile phone the action was by a "parallel structure" that would bring the necessary response.

He called on people to take to the streets to oppose the uprising.

Too early to be sure but the situation in these three countries is very different.

Saddam was removed by an illegal American/British invasion and then Iraq was left to fall apart.

Assad was attacked by various Muslim groups (a few of which were undoubtedly popular) but weakening him only let IS get stronger (see Iraq above).

Erdogan is taking a democratic and secular country back into the Middle Ages under his autocratic rule and early reports suggest the coup has been prompted by this.

Couldn't agree with you more about Erdogan, but half the country are strongly in favour of him and the other half strongly against.

A military coup is unlikely to bring any stability.

Yes it's not going to be pretty even if the coup succeeds.

Lots of angry confused people at Manchester airport today.

Do these people not have tellies / internet / radios in their cars?

Just heard one bloke say "We still came on spec, just in case it'd all blown over by the time we got there."

Yeah, right.....

Looks like the coup failed. They seem to have made the elementary error of not removing/capturing Erdogan first thing. I expect the drift to an Islamic dictatorship in Turkey to accelerate now. Sad.

2745 judges dismissed. It's starting to look like Erdogan might have encouraged the coup attempt in order to complete his destruction of democracy and imposition of an Islamist state.

I think you have hit the nail on the head Xmiles. This whole coup stinks of an inside job secretly planned by Erdogan and his cronies as a way of eliminating his enemies by pretending to put down a rebellion.

It's looking more and more like that.
How did they manage to identify about 2750 judges within hours and this morning over 6000 police officers with links to the 'rebels'.
That seems like huge efficiency for what is essentially an inefficient state. The whole thing is beginning to have an aroma of a pre planned government plot.

The fact that no real attempt was made to eliminate Erdogan is also extremely suspicious.

Very true.

Not that they were about to join the EU before despite the Brexit lies.

Turkey was never going to join the EU as long as the UK had a veto anyway  but I think this has put paid to any lingering hopes that it would become the world's first secular Muslim country providing a bridge to the Muslim world and possibly taking the lead in being an example to other Muslim countries what democracy and de-radicalisation look like.
Gutted really because Turkey was probably the West's best hope of limiting the power of the extremists.
And I feel really sorry for those westernised Turkish women who had abandoned the hijab and embraced Western culture.
This could set back progress 40 years or more.
Worse still, if Turkey is further impoverished by the collapse of the tourist industry and European businesses pulling out, it could become an anti-Western state right on Europe's borders instead of a barrier to the really nasty ideology that lies beyond.

And now the teachers. The "coup" was almost certainly a false flag operation.

It's definitely looking that way Erdogan looks like a real dictator. The whole EU thing only came about because of the refugee crisis and was a carrot dangled by the EU when we were begging him to house the refugees in camps there.
But you never hear him actually talk about EU membership all he usually refers to is visa free travel for Turks in Europe.
As has already been said with their geography it becoming a hard line Islamic state isn't great news.
