Max Clayton has made a return to full training for Wanderers nearly a full year since his last competitive appearance for the club.
The highly-rated attacker was given the all-clear by a knee specialist last week to increase his workload at Lostock and he joined in a full session with his team-mates on Monday.
Phil Parkinson described the 22-year-old’s return as a “real positive” and looks forward to welcoming him back into a match-day squad.
“It’s great for Max because he has had to be patient and wait for the right time,” the manager told The Bolton News. “It’s a great bonus for everyone to see him back in training.”
Clayton has not played a league game for Wanderers since November 2015, when he suffered a severe tear in his hamstring muscle against Brentford.
He impressed in pre-season and played in a handful of games but suffered swelling in his knee, which stopped him training from August onwards.
The youngster will now be eased back into action, with no date yet mentioned for his first team return.
Parkinson has got one new injury worry after the win at Swindon Town, with James Henry reporting some tightness in his hamstring. It is not yet known whether the winger will miss this weekend’s game at home to Oldham Athletic – with the Whites’ medical staff due to keep a close eye on him over the next few days.
Ex-Everton midfielder Leon Osman has confirmed he is on the lookout for a local club.
Osman has been given an open invitation to train with the club by Parkinson but the 35-year-old is yet to be offered a deal by Wanderers.
“I’m keeping in shape and haven’t given up hope of continuing to play football but I’m a family man now who’s just looking in the North West now, if I’m honest,” he told Radio City Liverpool on Monday night.
Ex-Leeds United and Northern Ireland Under-21 international striker Robbie McDaid is another player hoping to impress, and made his second appearance for David Lee’s Under-23s in their 0-0 draw at Colchester United on Monday afternoon. The 19-year-old is likely to play against Crewe at Leyland on Monday night before a decision is made on his future.
