Is this a good idea or it is just a smoke screen to build a load of new houses? Anyone on here live nearby and have an opinion?
Is it even a realistic prospect?

BOLTON could find out if it is to host the world’s biggest golf competition — the Ryder Cup — in under two years.

Developer Peel is planning to create a new international standard 18-hole golf course, with room for 70,000 spectators on the sprawling Hulton Park Estate.

And for the first time, the company has admitted that it will be bidding to host the showpiece tournament in the year 2026.

It has also been revealed that if the Ryder Cup bid is successful, the site will be committed to hosting major tournaments for the following 12 years.

The details of the bid are being put together and a decision on whether the best golfers from the United States will take on Europe’s top players in a thrilling contest in Bolton will be heard before 2019 and possibly even sooner.

If the bid is successful, work to begin building a golf course of ‘exceptional scale and quality’ on the estate will start in 2020 — with the course being completed by 2023.

Company bosses have also stated that even if the Ryder Cup bid is unsuccessful — it will aim to host other international golf tournaments at its new Hulton Park development.

Peel unveiled its ambitious plans to the public with an exhibition in the town centre yesterday.

It was revealed that the prestigious new golf course would measure 7,200 yards in length and would be a Par 72 course with six ‘challenging’ hole locations and a practice range of 400 by 100 metres.

There would also be practice greens and a spectator space for up to 70,000 people for the potential major tournaments taking place.

Richard Knight, planning director at Peel Land and Property admitted the Ryder Cup bid is an ambitious one — but said his firm are totally committed to it.

He said: “It is our ambition to get the Ryder Cup in 2026, whether we do or not is out of our control.

“All we can do is position our scheme to be the best site possible and that is what we have done.

“We have been having meetings and discussions with golf bodies and we believe our plan is very well placed.

“The Ryder Cup has been awarded to venues in the past that were still in the planning stage, it can be seen as a positive things because it secures that investment in new facilities.

“There is of course serious competition from other courses in the UK and in Europe and so we cannot say we will definitely be successful, it is out of our hands, but we wouldn’t be spending this much money on plans and preparation if we didn’t think we had a pretty good chance.”

If approved, the golf course resort will also include a luxury four or five star hotel, conference and banqueting facilities, a golf academy for younger players.and a bespoke clubhouse with views over the 18th green.

There is also a commitment to restore much of the heritage of the site, and create a new ‘Hulton Trail’ to give better access to the site for walkers and cyclists.

However, as The Bolton News revealed last week, Peel is also planning to build around 1,200 new homes on the land at Hulton Park.

The mixed range of houses and apartments are required to fund the rest of the development and will be built over a period of around 15 years.

Mr Knight explained: “The housing is necessary to fund the golf course, the hotel, the academy and the restoration work.

“But we would also say that housing is needed in Bolton and these plans will help to create a proper community of houses and a sustainable development.”

Scores of people came out to view the plans at the Market Place Shopping Centre yesterday, with a range of reactions.

David Bilney, aged 64, lives close to the estate.

He said: “I think there are still quite a lot of questions that need to be answered — especially in terms of infrastructure and access to the site.”

Golfer Ian Colman, aged 65, was impressed, he said: “I think the Ryder Cup might be a bit of a pipe dream but it would be amazing to have it in Bolton.

“Either way, it would be great for the town to have an international standard course and resort like this.”

It is thought an outline planning application for the project could be submitted before the end of the year.

The plans will be on display again today between 10am and 1pm at Westhoughton’s Carnegie Hall and then from 3pm until 6pm at St Andrew’s CEP school in Crescent Avenue.
