On Jay Spearing's fitness...
It’s a bit unfortunate for Jay. It was an innocuous incident in training where he’s over-stretched and it didn’t appear too bad.

We’ve had the scan and that’s come back showing it is worse than we thought.

We’re going to get it re-scanned on Monday because Jay himself doesn’t feel too bad, but we’ve got to listen to the specialist who has looked at the scan picture.

On his midfield options...
We’re short in that department. Josh Vela is suspended while Derik Osede has felt a slight problem with his back.

If you add Tom Thorpe, Darren Pratley and Mark Davies to that, that is quite a few players missing from the midfield.

We're still working with the loan players, whether they can play or not.

The team is going to have a different look about it. People who come into the team have the opportunity to take a claim and do their best to stay in the team.

I’ve said all along that we’re a tight group in terms of numbers but I firmly believe that everyone is capable of playing a part.

On Wanderers' winning run...
We’re taking this competition very seriously. We want to keep our run of results going and we’ll need to give everything.

On opponents Grimsby Town…
Grimsby did fantastically to win promotion last season. They should be in the Football League, the size of the club they are, and they’ve had a good start.

They’ve lost their manager to Shrewsbury. They look a decent side from the games I’ve watched this week but you’d expect that from a team playing with confidence.

It’s going to be fast and furious at the weekend, a real old-fashioned cup tie.

On the threat of an upset…
Any team who comes here in our league are bringing double the normal number of supporters so we're getting used to that.

We keep talking to the players about teams coming here and raising their game.

Our stadium is a great arena if you haven't been here before and the Grimsby lads will be up for it.

As a manager I've been both the favourites and the underdogs so I know what messages to pass on to my players and we'll got to be ready for a full-blooded cup tie.

And finally, on The Emirates FA Cup itself...

For me, the FA Cup is the biggest competition domestically in world football. The exposure you can get is tremendous.


We want to make sure no-one really talks about this game come Monday morning. We want to continue to be a part of the competition with a regulation victory at the weekend.

Preview: Five talking points ahead of Bolton Wanderers v Grimsby Town

1. Jay Spearing
Phil Parkinson confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Jay Spearing has been ruled out for up to four weeks with a groin injury.

While the gaffer also confirmed that the midfielder will have another scan next week, he will definitely miss Saturday's Emirates FA Cup first round clash with Grimsby Town.

Liam Trotter came back into the side in Spearing's place last week against Port Vale, while David Wheater has previously worn the armband in his and Darren Pratley's absence.

And while the former Liverpool man has been one of the Whites' star performers so far this season, Bolton will be determined to get the job done without him this weekend.

2. Midfield options and rotation
It's not just Jay Spearing who has been ruled out of Saturday's game with Josh Vela serving a one-match suspension and Derik Osede also an injury doubt.

The Trotters' options are a little light in the heart of midfield heading into the game with Tom Thorpe and Mark Davies also currently ruled out alongside the injured Pratley.

Meanwhile, Wanderers are also still waiting to hear whether they will be allowed to play their on-loan players against the Mariners.

But as one door closes, another door opens. Alex Perry and Jack Earing were both handed their Whites debuts earlier in the season and will be hoping for a second taste of senior action if required.

Elsewhere, the likes of Ben Alnwick, Dorian Dervite, Jamie Proctor and Chris Taylor will all be hoping for opportunities to impress if Parkinson decides to rotate his side.

Add into the equation Lewis Buxton, Max Clayton and Dean Moxey all closing in on first team returns and the manager has plenty to think about heading into Emirates FA Cup first round weekend.


3. Zach Clough
Fresh from being named PFA Fans' Sky Bet League One Player of the Month of October on Friday, Zach Clough will be hoping to continue his recent form on Saturday.

The forward first burst onto the scene in the Emriates FA Cup, scoring the winner on his debut in Bolton's third round victory over local-rivals Wigan Athletic in January 2015, before impressing in the Trotters' televised replay with Liverpool in the next round - winning a penalty along the way.

Coming into the game with five goals from his last four games, including three from his last two at Macron Stadium, the 21-year-old looks unstoppable at the moment. Grimsby Town, beware!

4. Gaffer's got form
This isn’t the first time that Wanderers and the Mariners have met in this competition, with the Whites boasting an unbeaten record in their past five FA Cup meetings.

The two sides last came up against each other back in January 2000 with Bolton running out 2-0 winners in the third round at Blundell Park on their way to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the gaffer has developed quite the taste for a cup run in the past during his time with Bradford City.

He was a Capital One Cup finalist with the Bantams in 2013 having knocked out Premier League trio Arsenal, Aston Villa and Wigan Athletic on their way to Wembley.

Parkinson also led Bradford to the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2015, memorably recovering from 2-0 down to beat eventual Premier League champions Chelsea 4-2 at Stamford Bridge before seeing off top-flight Sunderland.

5. Will Wanderers' winning run continue? 
Wanderers come into Saturday's match having won all of their last six games, only conceding one goal along the way.

Up to second in the Sky Bet League One table, attentions now turn to cup action with the Whites' final Checkatrade Trophy group game following their Emirates FA Cup tie against Grimsby.

With morale high in the Bolton camp, the Trotters will be eager to avoid a cup upset on Saturday as they look to maintain their recent run.

SEASON SO FAR…
Having won promotion back to Sky Bet League Two via the play-offs back in May, Grimsby in turn brought to an end a six-year exodus from the English Football League.

Relegated to non-league back in 2010 after finishing 23rd in the division’s standings, it has been a tough time since for the Mariners as they battled to return to the fourth tier of English football and following a number of close calls in recent years, they finally tasted success just six months ago.

Defeating Forest Green Rovers 3-1 at Wembley Stadium on May 15, Town had previously lost out in the semi-finals of the play-offs in 2013 and 2014 before suffering the agony of defeat at the national stadium last year.

With that disappointment now firmly behind them however, the club have certainly wasted no time in making their mark on Sky Bet League Two and after 15 outings, currently sit just a point shy of the top six in the division.

They were however dealt something of a blow last month however as manager Paul Hurst announced his departure with him having since taken over the reins of Sky Bet League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town.

Under the stewardship of Dave Moore – a former Town player - at the time of writing meanwhile, the east-coast outfit will be hoping to build on what has undoubtedly been a positive start to life back in the Football League.

And set to pit their wits against Wanderers for the first time in 15 years this afternoon, the Town faithful will be hopeful that they can replicate their league form in their cup exploits today.

This competition hasn’t generally been too kind to the Mariners in recent years – they have failed to make it past the first round in five of the last ten seasons – but that statistic will no doubt be an added incentive for the club to banish as they look to build on their early season exploits.

With the Whites meanwhile set to feature at this stage of the tournament for the first time in over two decades meanwhile, Phil Parkinson’s men will be keen to extend their winning run of late and book their place in the hat for the next round come 5pm Saturday.

CARETAKER MANAGER: DAVE MOORE
Town’s current caretaker manager following the recent departure of Hurst, Moore’s day-to-day job at the club sees him act as head physiotherapist.

Born and bred in the town of Grimsby, he has held numerous roles with Town but as a player, came up through the ranks of the Mariners’ youth system to make his debut in the 1978/79 campaign under manager Johnny Newman. 

Following in the footsteps of brothers Kevin and Andy, dad Roy and uncle Norman in playing for Town, he enjoyed five seasons with the club before leaving for Carlisle United in 1983. 

Joining Blackpool following a short spell with the Cumbrians, he made over 100 appearances in two years with the Seasiders before returning to his hometown club in 1986 for two further seasons. 

Eventually winding down his career with Boston United, he retired soon after and moved into coaching at Scunthorpe where he even enjoyed his first managerial role before switching back to Town once again where he has remained ever since.

KEY PLAYER: OMAR BOGLE
Town’s leading scorer in Sky Bet League Two this term with nine goals so far, Bogle has certainly taken to the Football League with ease. As a youngster meanwhile, the striker enjoyed spells with West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City and Celtic, but was unable to make his mark with any of the trio.

Returning to England in 2012, Bogle then linked up with Hinckley United and impressed for the club during the latter months of the 2011/12 campaign, enough to earn himself a move to Solihull Motors that summer. 

A three-year stint with the Midlands based outfit followed and despite attracting interest from clubs such as Bournemouth – whom he enjoyed a trial with in the summer of 2013 – he remained with the non-league side until last summer. 

Agreeing a three-year deal with today’s visitors meanwhile last June, the forward notched 16 times in all competitions throughout the Mariners’ 2015/16 Conference Premier campaign as they won promotion back to the Football League.
