Phil Parkinson will sit and fully digest the defeat against Chesterfield before deciding whether to make changes on Boxing Day.

Eager not to give any knee-jerk reaction to a disappointing afternoon at the Proact Stadium, the Wanderers boss says he will sit down with his coaching staff today to scrutinise the video evidence.

Few in a Bolton shirt were at their best on Saturday afternoon and Parkinson will wait and gauge the reaction of his players in training this week, with a nine-day break between games.

“There is quite a big gap between games, so we have got plenty of time to go away, analyse what we could have done better and then make up our minds on the best course for the next game,” he said. “The decisions like that do not have to be made right away.

“You have to keep in mind that we have been on a very good run and had have had an excellent points return. No-one likes getting beat but we have to keep some perspective.

“They did slow the game down a lot in the second half and we just couldn’t get any real pattern to our play, or any real flow in the football.

“It wasn’t for the lack of trying – we just lacked that little bit of quality when it was really needed.”

Wanderers have not had to contend with disappointment much this season, and had won 12 of their previous 14 games before defeat at Chesterfield.

Parkinson would rather not have to dwell on the result until after Christmas Day but still feels that a return to the automatic promotion places before the turn of the year is a realistic aim, with home games against Shrewsbury Town and league leaders Scunthorpe United on the immediate horizon.

“When you get beat you want a game to come along quickly,” he said. “We’ve spoken to the lads about wanting to be in that top two at the end of the Christmas period and now haven’t been able to do that.

“Ideally you’d want a chance to put that right quickly but there isn’t one, so we have to get back to work now and make sure we produce a performance like we did against Gillingham on Boxing Day when we play Shrewsbury.”

Asked if he had any complaints about the defending which allowed Liam O’Neil to open the scoring midway through the first half, Parkinson admitted an injury to Andy Taylor had left his full-back temporarily vulnerable.

“It came after he had just received some treatment, so he hadn’t quite got back into position,” he said. “Any goal you concede is preventable somewhere down the line and we’ve been very good defensively just recently.

“Clean sheets are great but when you don’t get one you have to go and score two down the other end – but not this time.”
