Steve Parkin has urged Wanderers to make their mark on League One before turning their attention to Big Sam’s return.

The Whites face leaders Scunthorpe United tomorrow followed by a trip to Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena two days later as their bid to move back into the automatic promotion spots continues.

But while many League One clubs will be in action again the following weekend, Wanderers will be welcoming Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace to the Macron for an eagerly-anticipated FA Cup third round clash.

Parkin wants points on the board before any thoughts drift towards the Eagles’ visit.

“A lot of games come thick and fast but once we’ve played the Coventry game we’ll have a little break from the league whereas most teams will play again,” he said.

“That’s why it’s important we put a marker down before we come up against Palace.

“This next game is the only one we can focus on. That’s the important one right now.”

Parkin is hoping for another good home turnout from fans looking to kick their New Year celebrations off in style.

Wanderers have won their last nine home games in all competitions and welcomed more than 16,000 through the gates on Boxing Day.

Scunthorpe have led the way in League One since Phil Parkinson’s side had a temporary dip in form in September and the assistant manager believes every bit of backing will be vital once again.

“The fans have been great and we’ve paid them back with some good performances at the Macron,” he said.

“We’ll need every voice and every help they can give us at the weekend.

“Touch-wood it’s proving to be a bit of a fortress at the moment. It’s an important game in the context of where we are in the division but more importantly it’s two good teams going head-to-head in front of what I am sure will be a decent crowd.”

Scunthorpe’s rise to prominence after last season’s seventh-placed finish has not surprised Parkin, who has been impressed with the Iron’s showing in the first half of the season.

“They are there on merit,” he said. “They have good players, a good squad, and I know the manager really well.

“They will be looking forward to it and I know we will be too, especially coming off the back of a good victory on Boxing Day.”
