Promotion is a must for Andy Taylor – but it does not hang exclusively on the outcome of this weekend’s game at Fleetwood Town.
Wanderers have lost ground on the top two after a run of just two wins in 10 games but could do themselves a huge favour with victory on their first-ever trip to Highbury.
Taylor knows the pressure is on but the experienced full-back rejects the theory that it is ‘win or bust’ on Saturday for Phil Parkinson’s men.
“It’s a big game because we’re pushing for the automatic spots and they are on a fantastic run, but at the same time it isn’t going to be won or lost on one afternoon,” he told The Bolton News. “We want to be in the driving seat but there are 11 games after that, so still a lot of points to go at.
“We’ll be working hard to try and make sure we get it right.”
Sheffield United extended their lead at the top of League One on Tuesday night but defeat for Scunthorpe at Charlton opens up an opportunity for the Whites.
Victory would put them within a point of Fleetwood with a game in hand, while Scunthorpe can also move level on points into second, having played two more games than Wanderers.
“First and foremost of the aim is to get promoted – first, second, play-offs, whatever,” Taylor proclaimed.
“We want to go up. Yes, we’d like to finish as champions, as everyone would, but the main aim has to be getting back into the Championship.
“There are a lot of lads, like myself, who are out of contract or on loan. We need to perform well and hopefully earn a new deal here or elsewhere.
“You need that promotion on your CV because it looks great. There is no better feeling than being in a successful team at whatever level and we’re working hard to achieve that.”
There will be no return for ex-Fleetwood loanee Chris Long, who serves out the last of his two-match ban. But Taylor admits the players will be picking his brains.
“If Longy can help us to get the upper hand in any way, we’ll take it,” he added.
