Jnjuries have thrown Phil Parkinson another selection curve-ball but the Wanderers boss reckons it is too late in the campaign to complain.

Ben Alnwick, Andy Taylor and possibly Gary Madine will all be unavailable from the team which beat Shrewsbury Town last weekend.

Opportunity could knock for Mark Howard, Dean Moxey or potentially Reece Wabara, who filled the left-back slot for the Under-23s against Coventry City on Monday night.

It certainly is not the first time Parkinson has had to alter his plans this season but the Whites boss is confident his peripheral players will be able to step in against Chesterfield.

Wanderers stand six points clear of Fleetwood Town and would dearly like to put more daylight between themselves and third place with a tricky trip to Southend United next up.

“This is what we have worked for all season – this run-in,” he told The Bolton News. “Every one of the lads, since day one of pre-season, every match they have played.

“We have seven games left and it doesn’t matter if you have played every week or you haven’t had as many games as you’d have liked so far, this is the time to make a difference.

“That’s why training, even away from the first team environment, is really important because you have to make sure that the lads are physically ready to come into a team and not needing weeks to warm-up or get up to speed.

“They do extra bits to top-up their intensity in training, which keeps them at a level and I have to credit the medical and sports science staff.”

Alnwick will miss the remainder of the season after damaging knee ligaments but Taylor is said to me making “good progress” after suffering a small calf tear.

Madine’s involvement is now the million dollar question.

“We’ll wait and see with Gary – he’ll be close but we’ll monitor that one,” Parkinson said. “We have got other players who can come in.”

Jay Spearing is also in shape to start, if needed, after sitting out last weekend.

“I feel it was the right call not to play him Saturday and Derik Osede has done really well,” Parkinson said. “Jem Karacan played 45 minutes for the reserves on Monday and did really well too.

“We’ve got great competition and sometimes that regulates the standard of training.”
