Theresa May is to make an unscheduled statement in Downing Street at 11:15 BST after her Cabinet meets.

In an unusual move, Number 10 did not announce what subject she would address but statements by the PM in the street are usually reserved for big announcements.

There is speculation that Mrs May could call a snap general election.

Downing Street has always denied she will call a vote before the next scheduled poll in 2020.

BBC assistant political editor Norman Smith says broadcasters usually know what is about to be announced, but on this occasion they do not.

"Prime ministers only make Downing Street statements when it's something significant," he said.

These statements can cover resignations and elections, but he added: "We do not know."

You can't, but with the fixed term act, she can't call a GE on her own anyway. She could I guess say she is preparing a bill to get parliament to dissolve itself. My folk in the so called know are saying she is stepping down for health reasons, though the most pessimistic thinks it's putting the country on war footing. As if we didn't have enough to be nervous about today

Just another example of what an idiot Corbyn is. He has actually voted more times with the Tories during his career than with Labour.

Still at least we will have to hope that Corbyn resigns on 9 June.

What a glorious day!

I hope xmiles is going to vote on policies and not just because his dad, grandad and great grandad voted Labour.

Happy to confirm I will be voting based on policies. However my father was a Tory voter.

With the decline of UKIP they'll get a larger majority which will reduce the influence of Tory backbenchers who could be obstructive. Some pundits feel that an increased majority - and an electoral mandate for May - will boost Brexit negotiations although the EU have been quick to point out that it won't change their position one iota.
Ultimately it's about political pragmatism as there probably won't be a better time to get a firm grip on power as their popularity will decline when the realities of Brexit start to kick in. As things currently stand, none of the Leave manifesto looks deliverable and the Tory manifesto that got them elected has long since been forgotten so moving the goalposts is probably May's best bet even though it does require another U turn on her behalf. Maybe this is a show of lack of confidence in their own negotiation position or a response to the recent spate of EU and non-EU countries telling May she's in for a rough ride when negotiations eventually begin?

Maybe she just wants to guarantee another 5 years in power to make sure the UK becomes great again.

That should be her election slogan. Make Britain Grate again.
Doing a decent job of that so far.

The polls have the Tories at about 44% if an election was today - if they were doing such a crap job why would nearly half the nation be voting for them?

Because Labour are in disarray and the Lib Dems have never recovered from their pact with the Devil.

I think it's more likely that people recognise the great job the Tories have done, in extremely difficult conditions.
