MARK Beevers has fired an early statement of intent to the Championship, warning: “We’re not here for a day out!”
The Wanderers defender recognises the odds will be stacked against his side next season with the financial landscape now very different from 12 months ago.
Reading and Huddersfield Town compete for the last Premier League place on Bank Holiday Monday – but Phil Parkinson’s side already know they will be up against some massive budgets in Derby County, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Hull City and Aston Villa.
By comparison, Ken Anderson is looking to bring Wanderers’ costs under control to avoid the problems which blighted the club’s last run at this level.
Beevers is confident Wanderers can cope with the step up in class and reckons last season’s promotion will give them an advantage over some of their Championship rivals.
“You look down the list of teams and, of course, it’s a different kettle of fish to what we’ve been used to in League One,” he told The Bolton News. “There’s teams who can spend millions.
“But we’re not going to be going to Sunderland, Leeds or whatever for a day out.
“We want to compete in this league. We believe we are good enough as players and this club deserves to be at that level minimum. It doesn’t look out of place.
“We have been used to winning games and that doesn’t leave you. If people think we’re going up there with a mind-set that just surviving is okay, they can think again.”
Parkinson switched to a back three in February after an injury to regular right-back Lawrie Wilson – and though David Wheater and Dorian Dervite are yet to commit to a new deal at the Macron, the big defender says the same formation can work again next season.
“We’ve had to adapt to a few different systems,” he said.
“When the manager said he wanted to switch up to three at the back with wing-backs it took us a little bit of time to get going but everyone bought into it. We finished strongly and I think it’s something we’re comfortable playing now. Whether he chooses to is down to him but I’d be comfortable.”
