Adam Armstrong hopes Newcastle United will be watching his every move after completing a six-month loan deal with Wanderers.
The striker is determined to get among the goals in the Championship in order to impress Premier League scouts at St James’ Park.
Armstrong helped England’s Under-20s to the World Cup this summer but knows he must earn his spurs at the Macron to get back into Rafa Benitez’s long-term plans.
And that could be good news for Phil Parkinson, who has beaten Brentford and Preston to secure the 20-year-old’s services until January.
“I’m not stupid,” Armstrong told The Bolton News. “I know as a striker what is expected from me and that’s goals. I think every footballer has some degree of pressure on their shoulders; it comes with the lifestyle.
“But growing up at Newcastle you know Alan Shearer is there as a legend everyone looks up to, so there is extra attention for a local lad. I’ve learned to live with it.
“Last season I scored a few at Barnsley and the season before that I scored a lot at Coventry. A young footballer needs to keep progressing, so I guess there is pressure on me to score goals and show Newcastle what I can do here at Bolton.”
Armstrong almost joined Wanderers last summer before opting for the Championship with Barnsley.
After improving his all-round game at Oakwell, he now feels he has joined a club heading in the right direction with a manager who can get the best out of him once again.
“Last summer I couldn’t turn down a chance in the Championship,” said the Newcastle man, who scored six goals during his time in South Yorkshire. “I think I improved as a footballer last season and it was hard work.
“There were players around me who could create goals but it didn’t quite happen for me like it had at Coventry. That happens in football. I’ll learn from the experience. I want to score goals for Bolton.”
Lens striker Habib Habibou is on trial at Wanderers until the end of the week but it is unlikely he will feature with Armstrong at Fylde tonight.
