Wanderers are still searching for their first league victory of the season after a narrow 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Gary Madine had two efforts cleared off the line in the latter stages as Wanderers craved a late equaliser following Jonathan Kodjia’s first-half penalty.
Nevertheless, despite Wanderers endeavour they left Villa Park empty handed in the final match before the October International break.
Speaking to bwfc.co.uk following the final whistle, manager Phil Parkinson covered the following points...
On his side’s performance…
I thought it was a good performance from us today against a very good team. We had some chances in the game with one cleared off the line with the final kick of the game.
I felt the lads gave us everything today, we looked strong defensively and we couldn’t have done much more. We need the quality in and around the opposition box, some magic or clinical finishing to give us all a lift.
The supporters gave us great backing today and they’ve clapped the lads off at the end because they know they’ve seen an honest performance. Like me they want to see some quality in and around the box, but we’re doing everything we can.
On the official’s performance…
I felt the linesman today has really cost us. The run for the build-up of their goal was offside and it has ended up costing us dear today. We should have been cooler and not give the penalty away, but I feel the confusion between the referee and his assistant early on has dented the assistants confidence in giving decisions.
The challenge on Karacan in the first-half should have led to a red card. It was a very dangerous tackle and the subsequent sending off late on has had no real bearing in the game.
On the return of Sammy Ameobi…
It was a big performance from Sammy today, we were unsure whether to start him today, but he was keen to start and although he was only going to go 60 minutes I thought he was really ready from the off today and looked a real bright spark for us today.
I though partnered with (Gary) Madine and (Adam) Armstrong they looked very dangerous today and we were unlucky not to get something from the game.
On the upcoming International break…
It’s going to be a big two weeks for a lot of the players now.
A few of the lads have needed a break with the heavy fixture load so it will be important for them to feel fresher.
It also gives (Derik) Osede, (Josh) Vela and others the chance to get back into first-team contention and make us stronger going forward for the rest of the season.
