It was 8am muster at the Macron for this season’s trip down to the plane-spotter’s paradise, Craven Cottage, which is directly under the flightpath to Heathrow, with planes flying over more frequently than Fulham normally attack.
Pre-match drinks were in the friendly Crabtree, where the locals recommended the very acceptable Wimbledon Common Pale Ale.
We met a young Spanish couple who had to come to see the Wanderers, for their first ever English football match.
Once they mentioned that Ivan Campo was from their Basque region, we serenaded them with a rousing chorus of ‘Ivan Campo’ and adopted them as BWFC supporters.
It was difficult to answer them as to who Bolton’s star players are at the moment but we went for Sammy Ameobi.
As for our chances at Fulham, hopes were high for a point at least to continue our recent revival. The locals confirmed they thought that Tim Ream was our loss and their gain as they consider him to be one of their best players.
Phil Parkinson seems to be settling on his starting XI, as he named an unchanged team for an unprecedented third time in a row.
We started well and in the first half we were the better team.
We deservedly went ahead through Ameobi, which impressed our friends from the Basque country as they were seen talking to him afterwards.
In the second half, Fulham naturally upped their game and put us under a lot of pressure as we re-enacted the Alamo and we held out until the fourth minute of added time.
Despite the pressure, we still had chances on the break to seal this match.
This is one area we must improve on so that we get the points we need to survive.
Let’s hope the injury to Andrew Taylor right at the start of the second half isn’t serious as our defence has begun to look more solid recently.
Before the match we would have happily accepted a point at Fulham – not one of our happier hunting grounds.
At the end, we were disappointed not to come away with three points and end 25 years of hurt.
But we’ve kept our unbeaten run going, narrowing the gap to safety by another point as the others around us all lost.
Let’s hope that we show the same spirit for Halloween at the Stadium of Light tomorrow.
