Oh my God. Just heard this really sad news on News at Ten. Shocked beyond belief (although I shouldn't be really).

Farewell to the REAL Hip Priest.

Very sad news, always had a passing interest in the Fall when i was growing up but only really became a fan a few years back and had all their recent albums. I went to see the Fall at the Factory in Manchester 3 or 4 years ago and for part of the gig he sat in a room at the side of the stage and carried on singingĀ  Very Happy. He'd broken his leg before that and needed a sit down.

A true musical pioneer and a complete one-off, i'm glad i got to see him live at least once.

Never truly liked him but I feel a bit sorry for my nephew (David Spurr) who toured with The Fall for 10 years as the bass player. One of Mark Smiths longest serving band members- he hired and fired them in quick succession.
My nephew is now out of a job as The Fall without Smith don't exist
