Bolton Wanderers are delighted to announce that Sammy Ameobi has signed a new two-year deal with the club.
The 26-year-old, who was out of contract after joining the Whites permanently last summer, turned down several offers from leading Sky Bet Championship clubs to remain at Macron Stadium.
Ameobi made 36 appearances and scored four goals in 2017/18 and was twice voted Player of the Month by the club’s supporters as he helped Bolton secure survival last season.
Initially joining the Trotters on loan from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day in August 2016, he also made 24 appearances and scored four goals during the first half of the 2016/17 campaign with Wanderers going on to win automatic promotion that year.
And with his contract due to expire this summer, the Whites have seen off competition to retain the winger’s signature and extend his stay at Macron Stadium until 2020.
Speaking to bwfc.co.uk after putting pen to paper, Ameobi said: ‘It’s great to have signed a new deal because this place means a lot to me. I’m really excited to be back and I can’t wait to get started.
“I spoke to the manager and he knows me very well. I get on so well with everyone here and it’s such a wonderful environment to work in. That was a huge factor in me wanting to stay here.”

Great news we cant have to much creativity, Sammy was the only creative player last season so with Oz and hopefully Chungy we have options.

After scoring the winner against Bristol City (beginning of Feb) guess how many goals and assists Ameobi scored/made for the rest of the season.

I dare you.

It's a myth that he's creative.

He wasn't creative at the end of the season because Parky tried to play him as a target man. Play him out wide and he'll do fine.

Another myth. He had plenty of games playing wide or floating but did bugger all. He was anonymous against Forest. The threat came from Morais and Little.

Letting Morais go and giving Ameobi two years is absolutely mental.

Nat’s right, he played wide more than he did target man after January. He’s hit and miss, but the only player we have who can go past a player and he does make chances, we need a creative midfielder to play him in and a decent striker who can finish them off.

Not many screamers when it really mattered i.e. the run in when we hardly won a game.

He was surrounded by a pretty poor team though. In truth I'm personally quite encouraged by what we've seen so far in this window. I think the club's doing alright given how little we have to play with financially. I'm not saying we're going to conquer the world but I'm beginning to feel quietly confident that a comfortable mid table finish is eminently possible.

People always use that excuse when they want to talk up a player who isn't good enough.

Good players will shine regardless of their teammates.

No one used the "surrounded by poor players" excuse for Derik, Buckley or Karacan. So why does it apply to Ameobi and not the others?

Because they were surrounded by decent, even good players. Ameobi isn't a world beater by any means but he definitely was surrounded by players who weren't good enough. Nat, no one is saying he's going to set the world alight next season but players who can carry a bad team by themselves are very few and far between. I think with some better support Ameobi can do a good job for us at this level and so far I've been encouraged by the direction the summer is taking. In some ways this summer is reminding me of what happened in the late eighties, early nineties. We were on our uppers then and had just barely survived as a club but with some clever dealing and careful allocation of available resources we began to climb back up again. Don't forget that when Bruce Rioch came in we were a third tier team with nothing. Three years later we were in the Prem and had become the team no one wanted to play in the cups. Maybe, just maybe that's what's going to happen this time as well. It'll be harder of course given how huge fees and wages have become but it's not completely impossible. Just for once I actually have hope and you know how rare that is for me.
