PHIL Parkinson has confirmed he will be in the market for another striker after wrapping up the signing of Josh Magennis from Charlton Athletic.
The Wanderers boss is understood to be close to landing the 27-year-old Northern Ireland international for £200,000 – his first cash signing since arriving at the club from Bradford City more than two years ago.
Parkinson refused to go into detail about the deal, other than to confirm it was close to being completed, but said he would quickly be turning his attention towards another front man to add to his ranks.
It is believed Bradford City’s Charlie Wyke remains a possibility, once he returns to training from a knee injury sustained in a friendly against Sheffield United, as does Ipswich Town’s Joe Garner.
Loan options are also being investigated – if Parkinson decides to invest the remaining cash available for a permanent deal into an attacking midfielder.
“Being honest, I am working towards bringing two strikers in,” he said. “We need them and I am quite happy that we are closing in on one of them.”
Wanderers finished their pre-season on a high yesterday, with Adam Le Fondre and Sammy Ameobi on target in a 2-0 win at Peterborough United.
“It was a good game,” Parkinson said. “We were struggling for this last fixture and had to travel all the way down here – but in the back of our mind we always knew against a Steve Evans team it was always going to be competitive. Conditions were difficult, the wind was swirling around, but the lads had to play like it was the first game of the season and I think they did. They scored two fantastic goals and showed a professionalism to see the game through in the second half.”
Reflecting on pre-season as a whole, Parkinson has been encouraged by the games in which he has been able to see his full strength side play.
“If you look at the last two first-team games against Girona and Peterborough I thought we were excellent. We have changed the shape between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 with Alfie just off Clayton,” he said.
“I look at Guiseley as a second string fixture, really, because we didn’t do much work on it. But I think that was a good way to end – a clean sheet and two goals, I’m really pleased.”
