Bolton Wanderers take on Ipswich Town this Saturday afternoon in the Sky Bet Championship at Portman Road. With that in mind, bwfc.co.uk take a look back at some of the notable names to have played for both sides.

Keith Branagan

Branagan joined from Millwall in 1992 and went onto make 263 appearances during an eight year stay with the Whites.

In this period, the Republic of Ireland international experienced three promotions with Wanderers.

Most supporters will remember his penalty save in the 1995 Play-off Final against Reading, which resulted in Bruce Rioch’s side gaining promotion to the Premier League.

After his time was up at the University of Bolton Stadium, Branagan saw out his career with Ipswich until 2002, when a shoulder injury forced the goalkeeper into retirement.

Ivan Campo

The former Spanish international midfielder joined Wanderers from European powerhouses Real Madrid on an initial one-year loan in August 2002.

After that campaign, Sam Allardyce signed the experienced anchor man to a three-year permanent deal at the Trotters.

The former Champions League winner went onto spend six great years with the Whites, appearing 194 times in Wanderers colours including the UEFA Cup on numerous occasions.

Following on from his stay in the northwest, Campo transferred to the Tractor Boys in August 2008.

A singular season was spent in Suffolk by Campo, where they finished ninth in the Sky Bet Championship.

Mark Fish

South African international Fish joined in 1997 from Lazio and at the time, became the highest paid player at the club.

Playing in Wanderers’ first season back in the top flight of English football, Fish was a constant fixture in the backline under Colin Todd.

Over 125 appearances later and the man nicknamed “Feesh” became a cult hero until his exit in 2000.

Fish in 2005 then had a loan spell with Ipswich Town, however this loan spell only lasted 45 minutes.

This was due to suffering from a cruciate ligament injury that temporarily forced Fish into an early retirement.

Liam Trotter

The Ipswich born tough tackler joined the Tractor Boys’ youth setup from an early age.

A notable achievement for Trotter is that he was a part of the 2004/05 FA Youth Cup winning side, beating a Southampton side boasting names such as Adam Lallana, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale.

He made his first team debut in Joe Royle’s last game in charge of the club against Plymouth Argyle, replacing Ian Westlake for the last ten minutes of the clash.

During his four-year stay at the club as a professional, he spent time on loan at Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United and Millwall, before joining the latter permanently in 2010.

In January 2014, Trotter joined Bolton on loan for the remainder of the 2013/14 season.

After making this move permanent in May of the same year, Trotter signed a three-year contract.

He scored his first goal as a fully-fledged Whites player against Rotherham United and made over 50 appearances for the Northwest club.

Liam Feeney

After a short loan spell in 2013, the winger re-joined Wanderers on a full transfer from Millwall in May 2014.

In his two years at the club, Feeney went on to make over 70 appearances for the Trotters.

Within this time, Feeney also had an interim spell on loan at Portman Road in March 2016, making his debut against Rotherham United as a second half substitute.

Jonathan Walters

After joining rivals Blackburn Rovers as a youth player, Walters had various clubs clambering for his signature but opted to sign for the Whites in 2001.

He made six first team appearances at Bolton, before joining Hull City in 2004.

When he joined Ipswich Town for the 2007/08 season, Walters took to the league by storm by winning the Player of the Year award in 2008 and top scoring with 13 goals that campaign.

With over 130 bows for the Tractor Boys, Walters left for Stoke City in 2010.

However it wouldn’t be the last time he put on that blue jersey, as he re-joined the club in August 2018 on a loan deal until January 2019.
