Wanderers have been urged to land a decisive blow at Sheffield Wednesday tonight.
Phil Parkinson rated Saturday’s draw at Millwall was one of the performances of the season – but wants his players to go one better at Hillsborough.
Having got themselves into the lead at The Den, Wanderers failed to find the crucial second goal to make the game comfortable, seeing two points slip through their fingers late on.
Faced with an out-of-sorts Owls, Parkinson is now keen to see his players show some ruthlessness in front of goal and lift themselves out of the bottom three ahead of the weekend derby against Wigan Athletic.
“Getting that second goal is absolutely crucial when you are playing well,” he told The Bolton News. “Our intention at half time was to play in the same manner – we didn’t put any order to sit back and protect the lead.
“Sometimes you have to give the opposition some credit and there was always going to be some sort of response at Millwall.
“But I was pleased because we had that physical edge back in our game. There have been sparks flying in challenges in both boxes, closing down has been excellent.
“I honestly think it was one of our best performances of the season but even after you’ve won a game there’s areas to discuss on a Monday morning because you always want to get better.
“And as we’ve said to the lads, at 1-0 we need to kill games off. We can’t let teams back in.”
Parkinson has been dealt some mixed injury news in the build-up to tonight’s game with Josh Magennis given the all-clear after a dead leg but minor doubts emerging over Will Buckley – who went off with cramp at The Den – and Marc Wilson.
“Taking Josh off when we did probably did him a favour and the injury doesn’t look bad at all,” he said. “Marc Wilson has a bit of tightness. It’s the first time he played midfield for about two years and it’s a different type of physical output required in that positon. Centre-halves cover the least distance in distance and intensity.
“None of the problems are serious. So now it’s up to me, Steve Parkin and Julian Darby now to pick a team which can go and get a result at Hillsborough.”
