They may be on a torrid run of form but Wanderers’ assistant manager Steve Parkin is full of festive spirit as they head for Brentford.

The Whites pushed title-chasers Leeds and Norwich all the way in their last two games and, though both ended in narrow defeats, the effort and commitment on show gives Phil Parkinson’s right-hand man cause to think a merry Christmas could be on the cards.

“This period is a wonderful period for me, it always has been,” he told the media yesterday. “I look forward to it so much, it’s four games in 11 days and it tests everybody, the players, the staff and the supporters. This period is massive, you can’t get away from that.

“It’s a good time of year for them, most of them have got a bit of time away from work and they can get behind their team. It’s a good time of year but we need to get some points.

“I think we need to look forward to this run of games, we’ve played some tough teams in the last couple of weeks – and that’s not to say these games are going to be easy, but we have to look forward to the games we’ve got coming up, and getting our form up and running at home.

“But first and foremost we’ve got a difficult place to go to against a team that’s got some quality players but aren’t picking up the results they’d like and it’s going to take a big effort to win this game.”

Wanderers are firmly entrenched in the relegation zone after a 12-game winless run that saw just three points from 36 chalked up, while Brentford are on the slide, having won just once since mid-September.

But Parkin says no one will be taking their hosts lightly this afternoon, insisting that only if they replicate the recent performances against the high-flying sides can they come away with a much-needed win.

“They’ve got quality players right throughout the team,” he added. “They’ve got individuals that can turn a game, there’s no doubt about that but for whatever reason they’re just not clicking at the moment. We have to respect their ability and make sure we play with the same heart and desire as we did at Norwich, if we do it could be a good Saturday for us.”
