Perhaps he wasn't giving 100% because he wasn't being paid on time and now a transfer window is imminent he is trying to impress to secure a move to a better run club?

I'm not sure why he ever became the scapegoat that he did. Yes, he's had his good patches and bad ones, but even at his crappest there will always be worse players in this team.
