Wanderers missed out on a chance to make up ground on the sides above them in the relegation race as they slipped to a 2-0 home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

Phil Parkinson admitted his side lacked the same bite they showed against Millwall on Saturday as goals from Steven Fletcher and Rolando Aarons booked three points for the Owls.

“I thought first half was tight, there wasn’t a great deal in it and there was only one moment of quality that really separated the two teams,” said the Wanderers boss.

“I just feel sometimes that when there’s a Tuesday game after the Saturday that first goal is even more important.

“We didn’t have the same level of intensity we had at the weekend and it just gave Sheffield Wednesday that lift.

“The rare moments of quality in the game came from them and that is what decided the match tonight.”

Blustery conditions at the UniBol made for a scrappy game – Wanderers only testing keeper Keiren Westwood in the dying moments with an angled shot from Clayton Donaldson.

Joe Williams also had a shot blocked on the line but Parkinson had no qualms that his side had been second best on the night.

“We did lack that intensity,” he said. “We have to be flat out to get results at this level and that first goal was so important.

“They were very difficult conditions, I have to say. It was hard to play and it’s not easy to appreciate when you are in the stand or the gantry where I was but on the pitch beforehand you noticed it.

“They had more quality when it mattered tonight, that’s the bottom line.”

It's sad that the blustery conditions played such a large part in the result last night.

If only we had been allowed to play our natural free flowing football , we would have been sure of another three points.

On the bright side, Donaldson's hilarious attempt at an overhead kick, provided me with a lasting memory.
