It won’t quite be ‘every man for himself’ at Wimbledon this afternoon for Wanderers – but Keith Hill accepts virtually everyone aboard the team bus has to look after their own future in the final 12 games of the season.

With almost a full squad out of contract, a big clear-out is expected at the UniBol this summer in preparation for League Two football.

Hill – whose own future as Bolton boss is far from clear – accepts there will be a certain amount of self-preservation for his players as they take to the pitch between now and May, whether that is to secure a deal with the Whites, or elsewhere.

“It’s the way it has always been – but you need each other, we’re not playing darts here,” he told The Bolton News. “It’s a team game and we look after one another.

“But the game of football is about contracts. You are in or you are out. You have to perform to stay in to get another one.

“We still see it as a great opportunity to represent Bolton Wanderers Football Club.

“Football’s a great industry to do something for right-here, right-now and for your future.

“We have got to come up with a motivation to stimulate success at this football club or it’ll just peter out. We have to find that motive between ourselves.

“It can’t always be a collective motive because there are players out of contract, staff out of contract, so you have to give your best every day in preparation for your next opportunity, which is the next game.

“That may then give you better choices in the future and that is what we’re trying to do.”

One plus point for Hill in the remaining dozen games could be the return to fitness of Anthony Georgiou, the Tottenham winger who is yet to make an appearance since signing on loan on the final day of the January transfer window.

The Wanderers boss hopes that his arrival in the team – which is likely to happen steadily over the course of the next few games – could provide some impetus for a much-craved upturn in results.

“It’s great to have him available to us,” he said. “He likes to drive past players, likes the ball to feet, he generates his own pace. We are looking forward to him providing opportunities for our strikers.”
