Keith Hill wants Ronan Darcy’s future wrapped up at Bolton Wanderers.

The highly-rated youngster is still on a scholarship deal but is now in talks with the club about a new contract in line with the one recently signed by Dennis Politic.

Darcy has been a mainstay of the first team this season having only made his senior debut last May.

He was dropped from the side against Tranmere on Saturday, however, after featuring in every league and cup game since December 7.

Explaining his decision, and confirming the contract talks, Hill said Darcy had a big part to play for Wanderers in the years to come.

“He has started the last 11 games and he was disappointed to be left out,” he told The Bolton News. “I say to all the players without disrespect to their professionalism, it’s all about winning.

“He had to come out because he’d played so many consecutive games and my experience with young players makes me think it was the right thing to do.

“He is fully inclusive and I want to sign him, I see him as a real star of the future but it’s important he ties it up with this football club like Dennis did.”

Hill brought in three new players on deadline day – Anthony Georgiou on loan from Spurs, Ryan Delaney from Rochdale and Jacob Mellis from Mansfield, which brings his squad up to the brim of the 23-man embargo quota.

But just a handful of those players have contracts which extend beyond the summer, which leaves the Bolton boss with some decisions to make over the next couple of months.

“We will know more after 18 games but someone like Ryan Delaney, bringing him in on an 18-month deal makes sense to me, Dennis Politic is signed up and hopefully Ronan Darcy will follow,” he said.

“Will think there are players here that we want to carry on through because whatever league we’re playing in we’ll be looking for promotion.

“It’s a good start. Talking with Peter Kenyon, February 1 was the start of the next phase and that means building continuity and a squad for next season.”
