I'm sorry to piss on your chips but it all depends on how the particular forum is 'built', some do indeed have access to private messages - but this one is 'bought off the shelf' so to speak rather than be 'hand built'.
Wanderers Ways and the Burden Aces forum both have/had Administrator rights to view pm's.
I know this as a fact in that I modded BA and the owner Chris Mann used to read pm's and discovered that one of the members (who went on to found the ST!) had set up his own rival forum and pm-ed his mates to get them to jump ship!
Mann, who was still in education at the time immediately banned the bloke, who because I was the one who basically ran the forum on a day to day basis, assumed it was me and waged a 'war' against me from then on, even brought his internet grudge into real life just to try to fuck Nuts up when we first started out!
I took the blame (and the abuse) without saying that I didn't even have banning powers, only Mann had!
I did so because Mann was still a kid basically in my eyes and the ST bloke was clearly a nasty fucker who didn't bother me but probably would upset/bully a youngster.
The irony of all this was that Mann ended up sacking me as a mod for no apparent reason and which came completely out of the blue, which resulted ultimately ended up with Natasha, myself and one or two others setting up Nuts as I no longer wished to stat with the site after being treated like that.
Fwiw I wanted to run Nuts in the most honest way I could from the outset so didn't do the dirty on Burden Aces by poaching their members but by doing it the best we could by asking permission of other forums to advertise there was a new Wanderers forum which only JA606 and Bolton Mad allowed us to do.
The Wanderer forum banned me for asking (I'm still banned from there even now) and Wanders ways never replied.
With hearing nothing from ww I took the liberty of pm-ing two people off there who had been regulars on Burden Aces and who had stopped posting on ww, namely 'George' and Diddles (who had just had a months ban from there!) I didn't even know if they frequented ww to even view the pm's!
The next thing I knew I received a ban from the owner of the site who had accessed and read my private messages - that ban lasted 5 years and I was only allowed back because they must have realised I knew what I was talking about during our Administration period.
That lasted until threats of physical violence and promises of finding out where he lived were made to 'Custard' and I stood up and told them what I thought about such behaviour particularly that Custard was in his seventies/eighties!!!
I was banned again and still am.
My view is that when all said and done we are just an internet footy forum and you are all grown ups - if you want to post here then fine, if you don't like it here go somewhere else.
I'm not paranoid to worry about plots to form rival sites or even usurp me on here (indeed that's been attempted more than once!) but whilst I'm at the helm I'll attempt to steer the site in a honest and fair way to all.
It's all just a way of passing our time anyway, not as though it's important in the scheme of things is it?
