Ian Evatt believes Premier League clubs need to get “realistic” in the money being asked to loan their young stars.

After a busy summer, Wanderers are still looking for at least one new signing but are finding themselves priced out by clubs higher up the ladder.

Bound by the League Two salary cap rules and their own transfer embargo, which runs to next May, Bolton will be unable to spend big on any new arrivals.

Evatt has already picked up Tom White from Blackburn and Billy Crellin from Fleetwood and is looking for other loan options who can fall within the guidelines.

But with money tight across the EFL the Whites head coach believes top clubs have to be more sensible with their demands if their young players are going to get the experience they need.

“Some of the young lads at Premier League level are on rock star money and haven’t really achieved much,” he told The Bolton News.

“They have to be realistic that we’re in the middle of a pandemic, we are struggling, there are no supporters in the stadium, so if they want their players to gain experience can they do that for a lower cost to help teams afford it?

“The alternative is that these young players are going to be rotting away in an Under-23s team and that’s no good for anyone.”

Pressure is being put on the Premier League to provide a ‘bail-out’ for clubs lower down the league in order to prevent a financial meltdown while supporters are unable to watch games.

Evatt believes they can also offer some assistance on the footballing front.

“It has to change. Football is struggling but the Premier League is such a huge attraction that the money is there for them to be able to sacrifice,” he said.

“It isn’t just a hand-out, either. We’d like to think with what we do on the training ground, our facilities, our coaching, that we’re actually going to add to a player’s value, not decrease it.

“They are coming here for a bit of experience. If they can help us with loan money and loan fees then we can add something to the value of their player as well.

“Valuable experience at a great football club who are trying to do things the right way. We have to try and build those relationships.”

Wanderers have tried to loan out some of their youngsters but found that uncertainty in the National League and below has made for a stagnant market.

George Thomason and Callum King-Harmes have signed for Bamber Bridge but further departures are expected in the coming weeks, a process Evatt hopes will be accelerated by the Government’s pledge for funding to help National League sides to begin their season.

“That is a problem,” he said. “On top of the pandemic and the financial insecurities which go with it, teams are not willing to take players on loan – and why would they? It is an extra cost that they don’t need.

“Once that situation settles, the league kicks-off and they are looking to sign players, then we can look again into loaning lads out.”
