Wanderers’ transfer activity could go right down to the wire in the summer window, warns Phil Parkinson.
The Whites boss wants at least two new signings before next Wednesday’s deadline and is understood to have offers on the table for a striker and a defender.
A winger has thus far proved elusive and attempts to sign Middlesbrough’s Muzzy Carayol now appear to be at an end.
Parkinson admits players may have to leave in order to comply with the club’s transfer embargo but has been assured by chairman Ken Anderson he will not have to cash in on his top stars.
Cash offers have been turned down for Josh Vela and Kaiyne Woolery, while loan bids from three Championship clubs for Jay Spearing – reportedly Brighton, Cardiff and Blackburn Rovers – have also been rejected.
“We may have to create spaces but we’re not in any mad rush to do that,” Parkinson told The Bolton News. “We want to add to the quality of what we’ve got but we might have to be patient, it might have to go to the wire.
“Certain players we’re speaking to, year-long loans from Premiership clubs, those clubs are not quite ready to release them yet.
“We have just got to sit tight and make sure we get someone who can really improve that starting XI.”
The lack of an emergency loan system has made tactics slightly different in this transfer window and it is expected the demand for long-term loans will be high in the final few days leading up to August 31.
Wanderers presented Parkinson with a range of options when he was interviewed for the post back in July and the manager confirmed some of those names are still a possibility.
“Myself, Ken and Lee (Anderson) discussed potential targets right at the very start and, more or less, they are still in play,” he said.
“I like when you sign a young player on loan when there’s a chance somewhere down the line that you can make it permanent. I think that’s the best scenario.
“We are looking at situations like that, we may not get one of them, we might well do, but we’ve still got players in our own squad that haven’t featured yet and who are desperate to get involved.”
