Ian Evatt has laid down a challenge to his young keeper Billy Crellin after watching him drop a howler in Wanderers’ 1-1 draw at Cambridge United.

Antoni Sarcevic made sure Bolton did not come away empty handed after an encouraging performance against the League Two leaders at start of play.

But the U’s were gifted an opening goal when Crellin punched into his own net after getting caught under a wind-affected Jack Iredale cross.

“I spoke to Billy in there and he’s a fantastic young goalie with loads of attributes and assets but we cannot afford for him to keep making mistakes,” Evatt said after the game.

“He cost us the first goal, in my opinion, at Barrow on Tuesday and maybe the second one, and then today.

“This is me saying to him publicly to man up. I have had that same conversation privately and this is a man’s game and three points are at stake. My team deserved to win today.”

Wanderers will also point to a Harry Brockbank goal, finishing off a 16-pass flowing move, which was unfairly ruled out for offside.

“The lads deserved to win today against a team that is top of the league and scoring plenty of goals, I cant remember them having much of a chance. I thought the back three defended like men in difficult conditions and circumstances and I think the team deserved more.

“We got let down by officials. A wonderful goal from Harry Brockbank was legitimate and three yards onside – I watched it back to make sure I was right this time. He’s onside.”

Eoin Doyle also limped off with an injury midway through the second half, replaced by Arthur Gnahoua, and is a major doubt to face his former club Bradford City on Tuesday night.

“It looks like a hamstring strain, which isn’t ideal,” he said.

“Arthur was unfortunate to be left out after Tuesday night, I thought he played well, and he came on and was a handful again.

“For whatever reason Lady Luck isn’t smiling on us at the moment but that will change because it’s a long old season.

“The most important thing today is the performance and this was a good one against a side that is top of the league.”

Difficult to be certain but that disallowed goal didn't look offside to me either.

Ifollow didn't show the right angle to be sure at first glance but whatever, it was a much improved performance that we should all be pleased about and hope that we can maintain that level for the rest of the season.
Saw Iles ratings and TBH i thought he was unfair on Crawford who not only made passes but was brilliant at closing them down - our best player (perhaps alongside Doyle) in the press IMO - we gave them fuck all today and - as was reflected in the Cambridge commentary - they just weren't used to that. It was very apparent that Cambridge haven't run into opposition that strong as yet this season.
I only hope that the players hadn't raised their game just because it was the - before today - top of the league side - and can play that way every week.

I think we were brilliant in this game and it really sent a message to the rest of the league. They wouldn’t admit it, but other teams will fear us now
