Wanderers’ season could well be defined by their actions in the next fortnight, according to manager Ian Evatt.

As 2021 begins and the January transfer window reopens, the Whites have one fixture before a 10-day hiatus that could make or break their campaign.

Evatt wants at least three new additions to his squad but could also ship out some of his under-performing stars to make way for even more signings.

Rumours circulated last night that loanees Billy Crellin and Tom White could soon return to their parent clubs, although there has been no official comment as yet from the UniBol.

Ex-Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Kieran Lee is in advanced talks over a contract, and there are also strong links to former Rangers wing-back, Declan John, who is currently out of favour at Swansea City.

Furthermore, Evatt is relishing the prospect of working on the training ground with his players for an extended period after a busy December.

Wanderers’ load was lightened somewhat by the cancellation of Tuesday’s home game with Morecambe, but Evatt believes the upcoming break can be a defining moment for his side.

“We have to try and improve,” he said. “We can slightly tinker but at the moment we can’t get any content into them on the training pitch because they have been playing-recovering-playing-recovering.

“We have identified that 10-day gap in January where we can actually get some content in and also strengthen the squad.

“That is a key window those 10 days. That is where the fundamental changes I need to make – the ones I can see need to be made – will happen in those 10 days.”

Evatt hopes to wrap up the signing of 32-year-old midfielder, Lee, as quickly as possible – and potentially even in time for Saturday’s home clash with Crawley Town.

Other targets may prove more difficult to land, most notably up front, where the Bolton boss wants a target-man type to complement his existing options, Nathan Delfouneso and Eoin Doyle.

Depending on when the Morecambe game is rearranged, Wanderers have six games to cram into next month and Evatt is weighing up how long he can wait before bringing in the extra bodies he needs.

“It’s chicken and egg,” he said. “We have identified initial targets we know are available, so we’re hopeful we can get those in. But not everybody.

“The first choices on the areas we want to improve might not become available until later on in the window. They might have aspirations to go to a higher level – League One or the Championship – or the club might be relying on signing someone themselves.

“Do you go early and get the second choice, or wait, be patient, and try to get the one you really want? It is risk and reward.”

"Save the season?"
We're 6 points - potentially more depending on Stevenage's game in hand - above the drop zone.
They could stop it now and we wouldn't be relegated for the first time in years.
Decent season so far by recent standards Smile
