MJ Williams says Wanderers will brush off defeat to Grimsby Town, assuring fans: “It isn’t over yet!”
Wanderers lost ground on league leaders Cambridge United and saw the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Morecambe whittled down to a single point after another unpredictable weekend in League Two.
But the Liverpudlian midfielder insists the dressing room will move on quickly after a rare off-day on the Lincolnshire coast, and have already begun preparations for the visit of Carlisle United on Tuesday night.
“Some of the results recently have been mad and we could have gone top of the league,” he said. “Cambridge won but we know it isn’t over, there will be a lot of twists and turns. “The lads were in this position at the start of the season and saying they were going to get there. We have to enjoy it, know how good we are.
“Of course there will be a few nerves before games. Morecambe are a point behind now but we can only focus on what we are doing. If we keep playing our football then it will come, starting Tuesday night.”
Williams believes that Wanderers can take plenty from their performance on the day at Blundell Park, even though they emerged empty-handed for only the second time since February.
“I don’t think we played badly today,” he said. “The first goal killed us straight away but from there we got on the ball and played some good football. We had chances but it is disappointing we didn’t put any away.
“In games like that when you are really pushing, a goal can go in at the other end and that is what happened for the second one.
“We can take positive things from that game. It was the early stages that things didn’t go right and we need to move on.”
Grimsby’s physical approach had been much-discussed in the build up to the game but nevertheless caught Bolton cold as Jay Matete rattled in an opening goal inside 60 seconds.
Williams explained: “We knew what was coming but the ball fell to them at the start and they went through to score. The gaffer told us what was going to happen and we didn’t deal with it well early on, so it put us on the back foot. By the time we pushed forward and grew into the game it was a bit too late.”
Wanderers also wasted a number of good opportunities to score well before Shaun Miller did so in the 95th minute.
Again, Williams has played down the significance in the short-term, insisting that Bolton’s front men will start firing again soon.
“We have made so many chances and today there were blocks on the line, keeper making a great save from Doyler. Sometimes you need that one to drop for you,” he said.
“I think we were playing Cambridge a few weeks back and it should have been three, four-nil but ends up as 2-1.
“The lads at the back and those protecting in front know we have got some great players up front. We have to keep the back door closed as well.”
