Former Bolton Wanderers striker Dean Holdsworth said he was “humbled and honoured” to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton.

Mr Holdsworth was awarded a Doctor of the University for his outstanding contribution to sport.

He said: “I know how powerful education is and we have to treat every child equally whether that is in education or sport.

“I am very proud to have such a strong relationship with the University of Bolton and honoured to be in front of such special people today.”

Mr Holdsworth received the Honorary Doctorate in a unique Covid-secure ceremony which was filmed for a special movie documenting this year’s innovative ‘Alternative Graduation’.

The University is one of the only ones in the UK to have invited graduands from this year and last to be presented with their degrees in person and their gowns, giving them the chance to have official photographs of their special day.

Mr Holdsworth joined Bolton Wanderers Football Club in 1997 for a club-record £3.5m.

He stayed at the club for five years and played a big part in Wanderers’ promotion-winning team.

Off the pitch, he was voted by his peers to become Chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association, a position he held for three years.

After his career, he became the founder of the Non-League Footballers’ Association (NLFA), recognising the needs of lower league players and being a cushion of support in their careers through education.

Mr Holdsworth became the record-breaking manager of Newport County FC in 2010 with 103 points in one season and went on to manage more than 100 games in league football.

If that isn't bizarre enough how about this as well -

MP Rebecca Long-Bailey receives Honorary Doctorate from University

Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long-Bailey received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bolton and described it as “the greatest honour so far in my political career”.

Former Shadow Cabinet member Mrs Long-Bailey was awarded a Doctor of Social Science for her outstanding contribution to local and national politics.

She said: “I am staggered and really honoured. I am delighted to be a part of the Bolton University community.”

Mrs Long-Bailey received the Honorary Doctorate in a unique Covid-secure ceremony which was filmed for a special movie documenting this year’s innovative ‘Alternative Graduation’.

The University of Bolton is one of the only ones in the UK to have invited graduands from this year and last to be presented with their degrees in person and their gowns, giving them the chance to have official photographs of their special day.

Mrs Long-Bailey has been the MP for Salford and Eccles since 2015 and has served in the Labour Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Shadow Secretary for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Shadow Education Secretary.

She has fought to alter the narrative on green economics to focus on the potential of the green industry to revitalise areas that had suffered from decades of industrial decline.

She has campaigned to use the power of new and innovative publicly-led business structures to distribute the prosperity generated to local communities.

Mrs Long-Bailey grew up in Manchester, close to Old Trafford football ground. Her interest in politics came at an early age, from seeing her parents and other local families' struggles.

What the fuck goes on at that university, who chooses these people and what have they ever done for Bolton (apart from missing a sitter at Wembley and screwing the club out of £1m from his £1 purchase of the club)???

..dunno..

It was a bit of a jaw dropping moment when I stumbled up on this, I had to laugh though!!!

What is this relationship between the club and the university, there seems to be many tenuous links - wasn't there a thing about a 'super car' or something they were building there and who sponsored us for a short while, or something like that, then they sponsored the shirts, then the stadium, isn't Lee and McGinlay running their football team or something, now Holdsworth's degree (notice the write up never mentioned his time as club owner - I wonder why...?)

And why Corbynista Long-Bailey, what's she ever done for Bolton, or anywhere else for that matter?

What is going on?

Fibrlec looks like the company folded. I suspect it was a very cheap deal!

It might well have been, wasn't it brought in when the payday loan company, Quick Quid, we had lined up for a reported £500k sponsorship deal was poo-poohed by the people who went on to form the Supporters Trust.

Iirc Andy Walton (the God botherer) led the protest -

FibrLec filled the gap after QQ were sent packing.

You are correct the company were liquidated - it never got going in the first place, so God knows how (or indeed if?) they actually sponsored us?

This was a bit of a write up of the company at the time -

What stuck in my mind though was there was something about a 'super car' or similar connected to all this.

Turns out that FibrLec had two directors, the student who gave the interview above and (I believe?) a lecturer at the university.

This person owned a company called Keating Supercars Ltd - that's what I must have had in my head - and this company too went into liquidation but this time owing something like £800k!!!

Reported in the BN on 10 July I see but not by the esteemed one, Sluffy? Could it possibly be that even he isn't that daft?

Doesn't seem to have been trumpeted by his ST admirers either so I suspect they and Iles didn't know about it.

I find it funny that there was absolutely no mention on his citation about him once being the owner of the towns football club where the university itself is from!

There's something that doesn't sit right for me with the university and its links to the club and indeed the FibrLec and Keating connections.

I suspect they did know about it but decided to keep their heads down.
