Ian Evatt has boosted his attacking options on the eve of Bolton Wanderers return to Sky Bet League One action by signing former Germany under 21 international Elias Kachunga on a two-year deal, subject to clearance.

The 29 year-old had been a summer target for the Wanderers manager following his departure from previous club Sheffield Wednesday.

Born in Germany, Kachunga came through the youth system of Borussia Monchengladbach and gained experience with several clubs in his homeland, including appearances in 44 Bundesliga matches.

He moved to English football in 2016 where he joined Huddersfield Town initially on loan.

After helping the Terriers win promotion to the Premier League, the West Yorkshire outfit paid just over £1 million to secure his services on a permanent basis.

He made over 100 appearances for Town, including 39 in the Premier League, during his time at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The versatile frontman, who can play as a number nine or on either wing, has been capped at under 19 and under 21 levels by Germany and also has represented DR Congo at full international level.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Kachunga said: “I’m really happy and excited to have signed for Bolton Wanderers.

“I’m a player who puts a lot of passion in my game and I will work very hard for this football club.

“I had really good talks with the gaffer and Chris (Markham – Technical Performance Director) and they explained what their plans for the club are.

“It’s been a really long time without supporters in the stadium and I’m now looking forward to playing in front of them here at the University of Bolton Stadium.”

Wanderers Manager Ian Evatt added: “Elias was one of our primary targets in the summer but it didn’t quite work out then.

“Sometimes football’s a funny old game and opportunities come around again.

“Elias is a fantastic player with a great pedigree and is versatile in attack which gives us the ability to play him in different ways

“He is vastly experienced, well-educated and has played the game at the highest level.

“We are delighted to have him on board.”

4 goals in his last 102 games.

Just what a goal-shy team like us needs.

Most of those games have been in the Premier League & Championship, lets hope the drop to League 1 proves to be more his level.

A message from my Wednesday mate on Kachunga:

The bad: I hated him to the point where I joined in the song the fans sang about him. To the tune of Culture's Club's Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?: "Do you really want Kachunga, do you really want to make me cry?".
He just didn't seem to do anything well although we were utter shit and it may have been hard to judge him fairly under those circumstances. To be honest very few players looked good.

The good: You're coming up from Lg2 and getting a Championship pedigree player with some PL experience so he could be fine in Lg1.
