I believe if you want a good forum you have to put effort into having things for people to read and comment on.  For instance your BEL's draw in a huge audience, Karly's Radio Nuts has a loyal following and Bob's Vince Watch might not be everyone's cup of tea but it certainly is the butt of many jokes - all three in their own way benefit the site.

I probably didn't make myself clear. I don't have a problem with "news" being in the News section, what I think detracts from the site is the amount of "news" that appears in the Bolton Wanderers Banter section.

For example, as I'm looking at the list of threads in the Banter section right now, over half have no replies. What do they all have in common? All taken from the BN. They're not "banter". And they're clearly not encouraging people to post. Yes, people may read them, but they'd still read them in the News section.

All these "news" items pushes genuine original threads off the first page, and all these zero-replies-threads give the impression the site is quieter than it actually is. Someone coming to the site for the first time might think this is just the BN in a different format.

If it puts me off starting a thread, it will do the same to others.

This is no way a dig at KP, I think he does a great job in the copy & paste department. I have nominated him for an MBE in the new year honours list, his dedication to cut & pasting is inspiring.

You have said this twice now and I'm a little confused by it.

The restrictions the BEN have put in place on the website affect us all. Whether we live in Bolton or as far as China.

I can understand why they have done this due to the loss of revenue last year when the lockdown started and not being able to sell the printed newspapers in newsagents due to them being closed.

There is another way of getting around these would be to use the built in privacy mode that's built in to most web browsers every time you wish to access it which will allow you to view the 20 articles every time you load this up.

This way is an easier alternative if you don't feel comfortable deleting the relevant cookies on a regular basis.

When it first started I'm sure I read that access was only restrained to those outside of the Bolton area - similar in a way how the radio football commentary is. I've lived under that misapprehension until now.

I'm not the most confident in tinkering about with cookies or privacy modes but I will give it a try when I reach my limit imposed by the paper.

If I suddenly disappear for a few months it will be because I pushed a button I shouldn't have done whilst trying to delete my BEN cookie!!!

Thanks for your help in all this Karly.

Fair enough.

Personally I prefer a lot of small threads than a few big ones for two reasons really, the first being things get lost and drowned out in say one big match thread, the second is because the forum simply looks more energetic and active.

I don't know if you view TW at all but they operate with just a few threads on both their Bolton and general threads and quite frankly it looks both inactive and up its own arse with some/many of the threads headings particularly relating to the match threads themselves - for instance the thread for the next game against Oxford is entitled 'Mortar Boards - boards for Mortar' which may be funny if you remember the Two Ronnie's sketch from forty odd years ago but probably bizarre and meaningless to most other people - anyway my point being I prefer many and frequent threads than a few gargantuan and seemingly long dead ones.

Each to their own and all that.

I'm just pleased if anyone wants to start any thread on here and am happy whichever section they want to post it in (within reason).

Totally agree. It's one thing to try to make the site look busy (which clearly doesn't have any effect - perhaps because zero replies indicates the opposite) but in posting news items on the chat area just makes it more difficult and occasionally annoying for those who do post.
I had to go back a whole page to find last season's NFL thread Smile

You don't get it, in fact very few of you do - forums are a thing of the past, most people under say the age of fifty don't bother with them and haven't done so for about the last ten years or more.

We've been going for years and I suspect most people who potentially could be posters on here probably know full well about our existence and choose not to, I would guess most probably don't post on any forum, let alone ours.

My criteria for Nuts has never been post counts. its been about news and fun.

If we have news it attracts people, if there is fun here, them maybe they might join in.

You and one or two others seem to interpret that as having YOUR fun on here irrespective of anyone else, or the site in general.

Well that's created loads of posts but it didn't do the site any favours at all has it?

If you are under some misapprehension that I've unbanned you because you tend to post a lot, then you best think again.

The only way the site will grow, if at all, is for the place to be one where people come for the news and gossip about the club and secondly that it is a generally friendly and cheerful place to visit.

Maybe then a few might want to join in.
