Ian Evatt has every faith the side he puts out at Wigan tomorrow night will be capable of booking a place in round three of the Carabao Cup.
The Wanderers boss looks set to make some changes at the DW Stadium to rest some of the players who were involved in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Oxford United.
But with plenty of options in his squad, Evatt is confident he will not be harming the overall effectiveness of what has become a well-oiled machine by swapping a few of the components.
“There is never a bad time to have a local derby,” he said. “We are in good form, playing well, players champing at the bit to play against our local rivals with a huge away following. Hopefully we will give a good account of ourselves.
“Whatever team I pick, the team will be capable of winning the game. Regardless of how many changes I make – if any – we will be capable of getting through to the next round.”
Evatt fancies the thought of drawing one of the Premier League elite in the next round, so while he understandably has one eye on the weekend trip to Cambridge United, he expects his team to be playing at full tilt at Wigan.
“The priority is the league and trying to get promotion, however, I did say we want a cup run. And we do want one,” he said.
“This is a great opportunity to get into the next round and potentially get a big team here or play away with the financial rewards that will bring. They are important to give us that chance to be sustainable.
“But there is no doubt the league is our priority, it has to be.”
Evatt also confirmed that Will Aimson is close to resuming full training after a groin problem.
The centre-back is yet to make his Bolton bow after signing in the summer but should be back in contention soon.
“He is doing much better, back out running on the grass again. We’re hopeful he will be joining in sessions again on Thursday, possibly Monday at the latest. All good with him now,” the manager said.
