Wanderers captain Ricardo Santos says the squad needs to “show more character” ahead of their trip to Wycombe this weekend.
Ian Evatt’s men head to Adams Park on the back of a 5-3 defeat against Stockport County in the FA Cup on Wednesday night.
Elias Kachunga and Amadou Bakayoko were both on target for the Whites, who missed out on a trip to League One rivals Rotherham in the second round.
Santos admits the squad felt like they let “the fans and the club down” at Edgeley Park and is determined to get back on track against Wycombe.
“We spoke after the game and felt it wasn’t us,” he told the club’s website.
“We need to show more character and stick together. We’ve got a big game on Saturday so we’ve got to quickly move on and focus on that.
“The fans came in their numbers as always and we felt we let ourselves, the fans and the club down – especially the management staff because the gaffer, Pete (Atherton) and Hirdy (Sam Hird) gave us a lot of detail in training.
“We haven’t played like that in a long while. We didn’t keep the ball and we weren’t strong enough.
“It was too easy. Everyone was disappointed and we need to move on, clear our heads and go again on Saturday.”
Santos – who was given the captain’s armband following Antoni Sarcevic’s shock departure last month – insists it is important to block out Wednesday night’s game and focus on delivering a performance against Wycombe.
The defender is keen to build on last week’s win against Crewe and put a run of results together to start climbing the League One table.
“The only way to forget about yesterday is to get a little league run going and show everyone what we are about,” he added.
“We need to perform in the league. We haven’t got a lot of time before we travel down to Wycombe.
“We’ve only got a couple of days to get going again so we’ve got to get our minds fresh and go again.”
Wycombe sit fourth in the league table after picking up 31 points from their opening 17 matches.
Gareth Ainsworth’s men enter the game on the back of a 1-0 defeat against Hartlepool on Tuesday night, with Mark Cullen getting the decisive goal.
