Striker Eoin Doyle "close" to making first team return for Bolton Wanderers 13223989

Eoin Doyle is itching to get back involved for Wanderers – but will only return when the time is right.

After missing the last three games with a calf injury, the Irish striker could be back in the squad to face Doncaster Rovers on Tuesday night.

Doyle had a painkilling injection in the muscle last week but was held back in the 1-0 defeat at Wycombe.

Evatt admits he has to get his timing right and is reluctant to lose the 33-year-old’s services for a long stretch, especially with the Whites already missing Josh Sheehan, Amadou Bakayoko, Gethin Jones, Andy Tutte and - potentially - MJ Williams.

Speaking about Doyle’s comeback after the Wycombe game, the Bolton boss said: “He is close and he is wanting to put himself forward but a 50 per cent Eoin Doyle is no good to anybody. We need him to be able to hit the ground running when he comes back.

“We are missing some big, big players who make a real difference to our team but I still think the ones who haven’t been getting those opportunities stepped up today.”

Wanderers have now dropped to 13th spot in League One, having won just one of their last seven in the league.

With home games against second-bottom Doncaster Rovers and another one of last season’s promoted sides, Cheltenham Town, on the immediate horizon, Evatt hopes the fans will back him and the players in what could be a crucial week.

“We are all suffering, nobody more so than me,” he said. “But times of struggle and adversity are the mark of the man and we need to have that belief and togetherness to pull through it. We will fight, we will scrap and we will do everything we can to change things.”
