An organisation set up to stop knife crime in Bolton has taken 94 weapons off the street in less than two months.

StopKnifeCrime has now won the backing of Bolton Wanderers in the Community

The group was formed after the death of Tyrone Williamson, aged 26, who was attacked on Battenberg Road in December.

The group was formed by three men from Hall 'i'th' Wood , Breightmet and Farnworth.

They knew Tyrone and also Cody Turner. Cody died after being stabbed in 2010 at the age of just 17.

Tragically schoolboy Reece Tansey was fatally stabbed last May.

Bolton Wanderers in the Community Remembrance Group is now working to set up amnesty bins in the area — and have more defibrillators installed.

StopKnifeCrime say that head of the football organisation Phil Mason has been in touch with the group.

The group offers to meet people who have a knife and hand it in to the police on their behalf.

The three are determined to make Bolton a better and safer place.

A spokesperson for the group welcomed the support from the town’s football team.

He said: “We have currently taken 94 knives, blades and axes off the streets in 40 days.

“We have also got our first amnesty knife bin installed.

“Having the likes of Phil Mason on board gives us their knowledge and guidance also contacts not only with expanding StopKnifeCrime but also with the support side of things.”

He added: “Plans going forward with support are to run a youth club and expand and be known and also do talks about knife crime awareness and have a solid mental health support system in place.

“We also have plans to have an amnesty knife bin in every area of Bolton and our aim is to get five out of ten installed in the first year, we are close to getting a second one purchased.”

Recently the group highlighted on social media it had handed in weapons to Bolton police after being approached by someone who 'didn’t want them anymore or for them to even get in to the wrong hands'.
