Price cap rising by 54%  

The price cap sets what the average household in England, Scotland and Wales will pay for energy if they’re not on a fixed deal with their supplier.

But your individual bill will be different depending on whether you live in a small flat or a large house and what your energy use is.

It means standard tariffs will go up by 54%.

About 22 million customers will be affected by the change in the price cap when it comes into effect in April.

There’s a different rate for prepayment customers: their price cap will rise by £708 to £2,107.

This is largely a global issue but it will get plenty of mileage because of the context i.e. inflation/prices rocketing, bank rate rising, wages stagnant. Part of the problem is global and part of the problem is the government but that combination leads to the simple fact that the majority of Brits will be poorer.

People who have to use prepayment meters are usually the lowest paid so how are they going to be able to pay that massive increase?

I get both gas and leccy from EDF and it went up to £161 a month at the end of last year to cover winter so God knows what i will be paying later in the year. This kind of rise is going to affect almost everyone and will lead to people having to choose whether to eat or use any energy.

Glad i got a wood burner installed at home now, it will be getting used a lot more at this rate!

We were with EDF but switched to Octopus where the main man talks a lot of sense and seems vey genuine. EDF customer service was appalling.

We were with AVRO, but after they went bust our account was been taken over by Octopus.

They seem to be really on the ball and I'm impressed with them so far. Good website.

Had an email from Octopus last week informing me that my monthly DD would be increasing by £22.

As long as they burn. Can you still buy Zip firelighters? We used them a lot when I was a kid. Boy scouts were way out of our pocket.

Bet this winds got those turbines flying, shame we can’t store the extra energy and use it later!!
