Finlay Lockett returned to action as Wanderers’ reserve side were beaten 1-0 by Huddersfield at the Eddie Davies Academy.
Connor Shanks got the decisive goal, providing a composed finish after just eight minutes.
Lockett managed around 30 minutes after coming on in place of Danny Jones, but opportunities were hard to come by against the Terriers.
It was the youngster’s first appearance since having surgery to repair a cruciate ligament injury last summer.
He had been tipped to make an impact on the first-team scene at Wanderers but suffered the injury during a 3-1 win against Oldham back in May.
The Whites named a young side, with several players away on international duty and Saturday’s trip to Wigan in mind.
The visitors went in front when Shanks managed to get in behind the Bolton defence and kept his cool to slot past Luke Hutchinson.
The linesman flagged for an offside but he was overruled by the referee and, following a slight delay, the goal was awarded.
Wanderers then had a let-off when Adam Beardsworth gave the ball away in his own half, with the visitors unable to get a shot away.
But the young defender made amends moments later, making an important tackle after the hosts were undone by a superb pass from Myles Bright.
After the break, Sam Peplow went for goal with a curling free kick but Hutchinson made a smart stop low to his left.
The young goalkeeper was again called into action minutes later, making a comfortable stop to deny Charles Ondo.
Huddersfield then came within inches of doubling their lead when Bright was denied by the foot of the post.
Lockett then managed to get into a decent position on the left flank but wasn’t able to pick out a Bolton shirt.
At the other end, Hutchinson did well to get a strong hand to Donay O’Brien-Brady and keep his side in the game.
In the final stages, Matthew Tweedley tried his luck from distance but his effort sailed wide of the post.
