Wanderers finished the season on a high following an entertaining 4-2 win against Fleetwood at the UniBol.
Dion Charles bagged a brace, with Declan John and substitute Jon Dadi Bodvarsson also getting on the scoresheet.
The result sees the Whites finish ninth in the League One table after Portsmouth suffered a 4-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.
Here are four key takeaways from the game.
Charles ends goal drought
Charles hit the ground running since joining the Whites from Accrington during the January window, scoring six goals in his first 11 games.
But heading into the final day of the season, the Northern Ireland international had gone 15 matches without a goal for club and country.
Charles got back on the scoresheet after beating Alex Cairns with a clinical finish seven minutes before the break.
And the old analogy of goals being like London buses came true when he added a second in remarkable circumstances, with his sliding tackle on Callum Camps looping over the helpless Cairns and into the net.
Trafford bounces back
James Trafford has been one of several success stories in the Wanderers squad since the January window.
The goalkeeper has been a mainstay since joining on loan from Manchester City, keeping Joel Dixon out of the side.
Trafford was at fault for Cheltenham’s goal last weekend but bounced back with another confident performance at the UniBol, making a couple of important stops to deny Cian Hayes and Garner.
“We want you to stay,” were the cries from the home fans and it is clear to see why they have taken to the youngster.
Thomason impresses in midfield
With MJ Williams out due to injury and Kyle Dempsey absent from the squad, George Thomason was given a start in midfield.
Thomason has had to be patient for opportunities at times this season but impressed alongside Aaron Morley against the Cod Army.
At just 21 years of age, Thomason has lots of potential and will only continue to get better with playing time.
Perhaps he is one of the players who will benefit most from the introduction of a ‘B’ team next season.
Post-match scenes
It was great to see the Wanderers squad greet the fans during their lap of appreciation after the final whistle.
Last summer, Evatt spoke about wanting to bring the club and its supporters back together after the club’s issues off the pitch and then the impacts of the pandemic.
Judging by the reception from the nearly 17,000 fans in attendance at the UniBol, it is fair to say the Bolton chief has achieved his goal.
The club has come a long way since the start of the season – both on and off the pitch – and there is a genuine sense of optimism about what lies ahead.
