Wycombe celebrations show a club in good shape, says Evatt 17368112

Celebrations between fans and players after Eoin Toal had re-established Wanderers’ lead at Wycombe ran deeper than 90 minutes, says Ian Evatt.

Once again, the Whites put the fans through the mill, succumbing to intense pressure from the home side in the second half to surrender a two-goal lead, before snatching one back again in a mad five minutes at the end.

Scenes of unbridled joy in the corner for the last two goals, the second despatched from the spot by Aaron Morley, were shared with substitutes, staff, and as many of the 750 travelling supporters who could scramble to the front of the stand.

Once the noise had died down it was left to Ian Evatt to make sense of it all, and though he was delighted to see his team build on their equally nerve-wracking win against Northampton at the weekend, he feels there is something bigger brewing that could really help Bolton in the long run.

“We have been speaking about impacting from the bench, believing and scoring late,” he said. “Momentum is a crazy thing in football and in a strange way their second goal helped us because they were protecting something, we weren’t. We played with that carefree attitude again and got the set play, possibly could have had a penalty with Josh Sheehan.

“But then when Toally scored we went on and got a fourth, and it was a thoroughly deserved win. We were the better team overall.

“There is a huge amount of togetherness. We have worked really hard on building that culture and environment that runs through the club, top to bottom.

“I was at the community charity dinner last Friday, and hearing some of the stories of the impact the club is having in Bolton is inspiring for me. Hearing some of the life-changing things that this club is doing again makes this an absolute privilege to be here, getting three points. This group are good people, they will work hard to connect, work hard to get the right results and that is something we should all be proud of.”

Paris Maghoma rewarded his manager’s decision to start him in midfield with his first goal for the club, doubled by George Thomason, who has slotted into a more advanced role over the past couple of games in the absence of Kyle Dempsey.

“We thought Paris’s ability to receive the ball between the lines and his ability to dribble and drive between opponents would help us because of the way they play,” Evatt explained.

“It was great for George to add goals to his game, it is certainly something that I have challenged him to do. We want him to start impacting games at the top end of the pitch, assists and goals. He has started that tonight.

“The back three/five stood up to everything, the front two were menaces, and Josh Sheehan just continues to dictate games for us in a really calm manner.

“We can’t get too high. We have to have the mindset now that this is done, finished, it’s the next game. Now we have to prepare for Charlton and go to get another three points.”
