Barnsley interim boss Martin Devaney admitted Wanderers’ third goal “hurt” – but insists they must “attack” the second leg.
The Tykes were beaten 3-1 at Oakwell. Dion Charles bagged a brace either side of half time before Sam Cosgrove pulled one back. Randell Williams wrapped up the result at the death with a corner that went straight in.
“I thought we started well,” Devaney said after the final whistle. “The goal was disappointing, obviously we had Coley (Devante Cole) off the pitch so we have to manage that a little bit better.
“Second half, I thought we had some spells where we were looking to get that goal and then it is a mistake, which can happen.
“At 2-0, we made changes and they affected the game. We get the goal, the momentum changes and we had two good chances with Phillo (Adam Phillips) - the keeper pulled off a great save.
“The third goal really hurt us. I thought it was a foul on Sam (Cosgrove) on the edge of the box and from that, they get the corner.
“All season, set-pieces have sort of let us down, especially defensive set-pieces. It is maybe a foul on the keeper, but it is what it is.
“We have to be positive and pick ourselves up. Stranger things have happened and we go again Tuesday, We will attack the game and if we score that first goal, anything can happen.”
Despite the result, Devaney felt there were some positives to take into the second leg at the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Tuesday night.
“Bolton are a good side, they have some really good individuals who can hurt you,” he continued. “I thought we contained them and kept them to few good chances.
“We had some long periods in the game where we were on top and trying to create. It wasn’t free-flowing, shot after shot - but we were still probing.
“We will dust ourselves off, reflect, look at the game and pick a team to go and try to win on Tuesday.”
