Just as much as someone doing 45 or less on a motorway could actually kill somone due to dangerous driving!!! That is a fact in that is 45 is actually too slow for a motorway and know people who have been done for driving that slow - when there was no reason to - classed as Dangerous Driving!!!

Of all the people who died on UK motorways between 2007-2010 less than 1% were killed due to someone going too slow.

Anyway, if people weren't going over 70mph, 45mph wouldn't be too slow.

45 is classed as to slow, although not official, even if others were not going over 70 - its about your own safety and the safety of vehicles/passengers around you.

Why do you think learner drivers are not allowed on the Motorway network, because they drive too slow?

No, because they have no experience of driving.

but its a road isn't it and they drive on "A", "B" and "unclassified" roads, so whats the difference?

edit...

There are also times when "normal" roads are more chaotic than motorways, sometimes the speed is faster. think about rush-hour on normal roads, or what about ring roads and by-passes, such as Victoria Road which was a 50 zone and of course St Peters Way which used to be a 70 zone and wasn't a motorway!

Did you train to have Motorway experience, before getting on a motorway? I can guarantee that most haven't therefore very few people have motorway experience! Razz

The government, about 3 years(ish) ago acknowledged that the mortorways were the safest of all the roads, and were going to put the limit up to at least 80. However, it was pointed out to them, that they had just started a road safety campaign for the local , or non-motorway roads, so they binned it. They still believe, and statistics bear it out, that the motorways remain safer by a long chalk. I drive to Germany at least once a year, and 90-d100 is no problem. I do the same speed on a UK motorway at times, but the only thing that holds me back is that if you are caught doing 30 mile an hour over the limit, (any limit) you are automatically banned. Another point is that when you drive at a high speed, (or any speed for that matter), you and your reactions adjust accordingly.

I got caught doing 47 in a 40 zone- and got sent on speed awareness course yesterday. And it was absolute bollocks. Two retired self- centric old tossers telling me about the highway code and asking me why I go a bit fast sometimes. Patronising clowns. One was a scouser- so that rubbed salt in the wound. Typical Giro-city inhabitant- thought he wa funny

I felt like speeding on the M61 afterwards just to get the frustration out of my system. But I didn't.

It was a waste of time- but kept the points off the licence

I've driven at over 160mph on the German autobahn. Great fun.

It would probably be carnage over here if we were all allowed to that though.

The Germans are quite crafty in that you need to slow down when coming to an exit, even though you are on the main carriageway. I was flashed a couple of years ago, (doing about 90), as I passed an off ramp, but the law at the time meant that they couldn't chase me for it. However, I believe this has now changed.. An 'advisory' speed limit is in operation in many places, and I'm not sure if you can be done for speeding if you go over it. I have a feeling the autobhan, or parts of it are no longer limit-free.

I got loads of speeding tickets in Germany. They're proper shadey bastards with their cameras. You get sent a photo of yourself committing the offence and then either have to own up or deny it's you. The picture is usually pretty conclusive though. I didn't pay any of my fines btw. I'm English ffs.

Mind how you go next time, you might find you get a bill and a ban, endorsed by the British Police. If you get done before April, let us know, as thats when I'm due to drive down there.again Very Happy Just for info the French police are supposed to be even worse, and hate the british drivers haring to and from the ferry ports, and have also brought in stiff fines for us. (haven't been caught yet though)
