You hear about in some countries that public transport is really cheap and reliable, but I have to say I am absolutely disgusted with the price of public transport.
A couple of weeks ago I decided to get the bus 2.5 miles as I couldn't be arsed walking it and it cost me £2.70. I was gobsmacked. In my car £2.70 of petrol would probably get me 30 miles.

I also was outraged by train prices. A year ago I got a train journey 1 stop - 10 miles and it cost £6.70. Outrageous. What I do now is that I go on without a ticket, have a tenner in my hand and when the ticket conductor comes down the trains saying tickets from Durham I just look out of the window. If he stops and says something I will reluctantly pay but they never do stop.

But it is outrageous, our public transport is so expensive and so unreliable. Anyone else have any similar bad experiences?

I agree it's an absolute rip-off. I could accept it if the facilities were top notch and buses/trains arrived on time.

Having said that, I don't think I've been on a bus since 1992.

I agree its a joke, don't use it often though.

I can get a taxi into town for the same price as a bus fare.

Went to London at the weekend, single journey on the tube was £4.50, that's a joke.

What I don't get are the plans to make it free for armed forces personnel, I don't get it at all. The prices keep going up for everyone else, but because they chose that career they get it free?

Ridiculous, just another government plan to try and keep them onside during cuts.

I'd accept a discount, but free?? Whilst Im paying £4.50 for a single journey, do me a favour.

I live a couple miles from town and it's £1.50 each way on the bus. I usually have to be in town three times a week, so in walking there and back I save myself £9 a week, or over £400 a year, which pays for two holidays. The inconsistency also pisses me off. It's only a quid on the 519 to Johnson Fold, which is a mile further.

So yes, it is scandalous.

I have a 'Bus Pass' which I use when I'm in Bolton. (don't tell anybody) I always rent a car when I come over but sometimes the bus is more convenient than driving and finding a parking space and the bus stops outside the Queen Lizzie so I can use the bus to get back into town for free when I've had a few.

They risk their lives on not much more than minimum wage. I think they deserve free transport when in the country that they protect.

Let me tell you something about these heroes of ours. I was on a night out in Richmond, North Yorkshire, nearby is Catterick Garrison where there are a lot of squadies. There were a lot of squadies out and I have never seen so many fights take place than that night - and it was all squadies. They are not heroes, they are thick as shit thugs. If it wasn't for the army they would all be on the dole. Heroes my arse.

Squaddies fighting is no different than a bus driver driving his car to Blackpool. They are just perfecting their work skills.

Protect us from what? High oil prices?

Iv got nothing against the forces but I don't see how their career should earn them special treatment to that extent, a discount would suffice.

Bus fares on First Manchester have just been reduced by, on average, 20%.

A single to Breightmet (Somerton Road) is now only £1.50, from Bolton Bus Station, compared to £2.95 this time last year!

Train fares are pathetic, why are there so many different prices for the same journey??? Cheapest I have had for Virgin was last month when I paid £25 return, in advance, from Manchester to London but if you pay on the day its a staggering £154 single, and not even first class!!!

But a weekly between Bolton and Manchester is only £26.30 and that is not bad, meaning its only £3.76 day.

Dont forget with a car its not just thr ptice of petrol you have to take into consideration its also the car servicing, possible MOT, car insurance, Motor Vehicle Excise Duty (car tax) then there is parking, and if you are unlucky enough have to pay for on-street parking where you live and any repairs as well!!
