I've made my feelings quite clear on suicide, unless you have a terminal illness it is a cowardly thing to do. Top yourself and leave your family to find your dead body swinging from the rafters or with a bullet through your brain.

Nice.

But one thing I hate more than suicide is people feeling the need to tell the world they tried to commit suicide. Today that utter bellend Stephen Fry has decided to inform the world that he tried to kill himself last year.

Why does he have to tell us? Why should we care? Could it be a cynical ploy to get £50k from a tabloid newspaper for his "story".

Fuck off Fry, I wish your attempt had been successful.

It's a selfish act imo.

I actually find Fry quite annoying even without his nervous breakdowns and suicide attempts. It must be a hard life being rich and famous.

Anyone pushed to the brink and thinking about ending their own life have my full sympathy.

If you wanted to kill yourself why would you make it public, why not just get on with it. It's not difficult to kill yourself if you're serious about it.

Michael Jackson's daughter too, but I can understand her wanting to top herself having to live with the rest of his family.

Exactly. I'm sure she's not short of a penny or two. Rather than top herself she could have walked away from it all and started a new life somewhere else.

If he really wanted to top himself he would've done it by now. It's not difficult to put a rope round your neck and hang yourself. He's an attention seeking wanker.

I don't agree with the views on suicide. But i do agree with the Fry comments.

Who else other than his close friends or family/doctors need to know about this?

I can't imagine a journalist said to him "have you ever... well.. tried to kill yourself?"

No other reason for him to mention it.

Two thoughts:
If anyone was actually arsed about my life and I could get a large wodge of cash for telling a journalist that I've had a rough life I'd consider it as I could console myself with the cash. Sadly, I'm not lucky enough to be in the position to have that choice to make.
Secondly they say that a problem shared is a problem halved - maybe the depressed guy is telling the world as part of his therapy?

You have no idea what it's like to live with a mental disorder, except maybe HPD. If you did, you'd know that rationality doesn't come into it. That's the whole basis of the illness. I think people think they know what depression is because they felt low once over unpaid bills or relationships gone wrong etc. Manic depression is completely different, and just as crippling as many a terrible physical illness. It's just not about what one does or doesn't have going for them. The brain either works or it doesn't, and it's not always linked to the size of your house or the number of cars you own. It's like every bodily organ in that respect. If Stephen Fry was offered mental stability for life in exchange for his rich lifestyle, he'd take it.

I've never heard of anyone with a mental disorder ringing the Daily Mail to tell them they tried to kill themselves. Is ringing a newspaper a sign of a mental disorder?

You're just looking for excuses for a blatant bit of self-promotion.

I agree. Not to mention the comfort mental illness sufferers take from knowing they aren't the only ones.

We'd still be living in the dark ages with Natasha if it weren't for the likes of Stephen Fry speaking out about the issue.
