Stephen Fry publicises his problems with mental illness because he is the President of the mental illness charity MIND. Mental illness carries a stigma and still these days people can be ashamed of saying they are mentally ill. If you have a broken leg or an obvious physical illness other people easily recognise this, accept it and are sympathetic. Not so with mental illness, you're more likely to be regarded as a loony or just a strange person. Prominent people in society who are prepared to come out and admit their struggles with mental illness like Fry and Denise Welch (I know, she gets on my t1ts as well) are performing a vital function for people with mental health problems in that they can see that if famous people like Stephen Fry can suffer then maybe they are not so different, unusual or alone.
Is anybody seriously suggesting that Stephen Fry needs either £50,000 from the Daily Mail or some more publicity.
The phrase mental illness covers all sorts of things from Clinical and Manic Depression,Self Harm,OCD,Schizophrenia to Alzheimer's Disease.
I can always accept that people who have never suffered from any of the above (and I guess you can probably tell that I have) have no idea of the suffering these illnesses can cause (and let's face it,each of the the above named illnesses can lead a person to take his own life)and until someone's been through it themself they never will properly understand. But some of you on this thread who have been calling various people bell-ends etc.and ridiculing the likes of Stephen Fry, how will you cope if you are just one of the many people who are struck down by the mental illness that is Alzheimer's in your later years. Will you just be able to dismiss that easily as well.
