Bolton Players: No Future?

The fact that Petrov has been ditched by Espanyol without starting a single game got me to thinking, how many Bolton players in the last 20 years have actually gone onto bigger and better things? Not many.

Eidur Gudjohnsen is one, Kevin Nolan is another. There must be others but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Fatboy Michael Ricketts thought he was bigger than us (he was bigger than most things to be fair) but his career ended the minute he left Bolton. Same with Arnar Gunnlaugsson.

Per Frandsen stupidly thought he could do better at Blackburn, but was back within a few months.

Who else has fucked us off but ended up regretting it?

Well Stubbs, McAteer, Alan Thompson, Vaz Te probably did. But like you say so many leave thinking they are moving on to better things actually went in a rapid decline. Gunnlaugson looked a world beater for us that season he started playing, IMO he was the best player I have ever seen in a bolton shirt, I can't believe he never reproduced that form again. Same with Curcic and Ricketts - looked awesome for us and they soon were on the scrap heap. 
I always wondered if Ricketts regretted leaving us.

Agreed - for a few months he was simply unstoppable. Brilliant to watch.

Wasn't Frandsen's decision to move, so I would appreciate you taking him out of this. He doesn't deserve misinformation being chucked around about him. He's a top guy.

You could also add Nigel Reo-Coker to the list. He was the first to jump ship, after our relegation and he thought a "big club" would take him on. Wrong! He's now earning just £2500 a week playing in the MLS.

Agree, Frandsen was a quality player and the fact we actually made money on the deal from the dingles makes it all the sweeter!
