WANDERERS have two wing targets in their sights – with moves in the offing for Newcastle United’s Sammy Ameobi and ex-Crystal Palace star Andre Moritz.
Dougie Freedman is anxious to improve his attacking options and has lined up a six-month loan move for England Under-21 wide man Ameobi.
But the Wanderers boss also revealed to The Bolton News he is considering a potentially cheaper deal for his former Selhurst Park charge Moritz, who recently turned down a chance to stay with the Eagles in the Premier League.
The free agent, who has played top-flight football in Brazil and Turkey, wants to stay in England and has a couple of offers on the table.
Freedman also has different names up his sleeve and could yet explore other options, depending on the budget he is given, but speaking from Wanderers’ training camp in Spain, he admitted the 26-year-old was a name on his shortlist.
“It is something we are looking at,” he said. “I’ve worked with him before and with it being a free transfer, if it was also an acceptable wage, then it might be something we can do.”
Ameobi spent three months on loan with Middlesbrough last season, where he scored on debut against Cardiff and made nine appearances, including a start at the Reebok in Boro’s 2-1 defeat in April. He also has 27 games under his belt with Newcastle, including 14 last season at the height of Alan Pardew’s injury crisis.
Ameobi was left out of the England U21 squad this summer and had been due to train with Newcastle over the next couple of weeks.
Sources in the North East claim a deal could be pushed through in time for Ameobi to feature in the Whites’ opening day clash with Burnley. But with Freedman currently looking to secure finances for a couple of deals, it appears he would first prefer to make a decision on a permanent deal for Moritz.
The Brazilian playmaker made a surprising exit at Palace a couple of weeks ago after looking set to sign a new deal for Ian Holloway’s newly-promoted team.
Sources close to the player claim the former Fluminense and Kayserispor man decided to leave Selhurst Park because he did not feel the tactical system Holloway was preparing to use in the Premier League would give him enough opportunities.
Moritz can play either side of a main striker but has spent most of his career as a “number 10” – a position Freedman has hinted could be earmarked for Chris Eagles.
