Jay Spearing admits the crosshairs will be aimed squarely at ex-Wanderer Liam Feeney if he takes to the pitch on Saturday for Millwall.
Wanderers know what a threat the winger poses after an all-too-brief loan spell that ended prematurely last month.
But while Whites midfielder Spearing acknowledged the impact Feeney made in four appearances for the club, he will be out to make sure his former team-mate does not get things his own way this weekend.
“Liam did really, really well when he was here and the lads got on with him,” Spearing said. “He showed the fans exactly what he was all about with the performances he put in while he was here and we were buzzing for him.
“But if he plays, he plays, we can’t do a lot about it because it’s his parent club. Hopefully we can stop him from taking people on and whipping those crosses in.”
Dougie Freedman announced last week that he plans to investigate a permanent move for Feeney in January.
Wanderers had refused to pay the pre-agreed fee that made up part of his three-month loan contract, forcing Millwall to call him back after only 28 days.
Freedman believes there will be “room to negotiate” when the transfer window reopens and speaking on behalf of the dressing room, Spearing says there is an appetite within the squad to see Feeney playing in Wanderers colours once again.
“Of course there is,” he said. “With most of the lads who’ve come in, we all really got on with them.
“Liam is a top lad and really deserved to pick up the man-of-the-match award at Birmingham. The lads are all hoping that he can come back – but if he doesn’t then I’d wish him all the best in his career.”
