If you join the M62 heading for Warrington from the M602, just after the Eccles turnoff, and you look to your left, you can see a massive area has been cordoned off with metal fencing and barbed wire. Most of the fracking is taking place at night under cover of darkness.

I'm all for new forms of sustainable energy but is fracking all it's cracked up to be?

In 2011 the government pulled the plug on the fracking project in Sussex but now they seem to have had a rethink and moved the practice oop north.

I have to agree with Mr Magoo, I don't think it's safe and not worth it for the risk to be fair.

If successful, once everyone has had their hand in the pie, there will be nothing left for us like usual.

I work in Irlam and this is the first I've heard of any proposed fracking.

I thought the on-going excavations around the rugby ground were just part of the road improvement scheme.

But ,to be honest, it all makes sense now.

Why would the council waste millions improving the communication network to what is basically, a proper one-horse town, full of inbred hill-billies?

Because there's gas under them there hills, that's why.....

I hope the whole lot collapses taking Irlam and Cadishead with it because it's a shit-hole.

There is a large group of protesters camping out on Barton Moss. Some of them have travelled down from Sussex.

The Yanks have been doing it for a while now and say that it's safe. Unfortunately I can't trust anything the Yanks say.

They also have far more unpopulated expanses of land than we do.

Is there still any confirmed/non confirmed view about it affecting the water supply?

Somebody is making money out of it. The company at Irlam have hired security guards who patrol the site round the clock. It looks like a war zone with all the arc lights and steel shutters.

There's been mither for years about the effect of nuclear power, recycling and decommissioning having an adverse effect on the water table, this method of 'gas mining' appears to give a greater risk.

There are over 100 protesters now camping out on Barton Moss. It was on the news tonight and the CEO for Igas claimed they were not fracking but drilling for methane from coal instead. It hasn't stopped the great unwashed from turning out in numbers.

Until the government gets its finger out and builds more nuclear power stations instead of pouncing around with wind farms then fracking is the way to go. The US has become almost self sufficient in energy and prices have dropped by a third.

This country is bleeding hopeless when it comes to strategic long term planning.

Get fooking on with it.

It's been kicking off on Barton Moss today. The bloody helicopter has been hovering over the site for the last two days filming the comings and goings and the police have arrested a few protesters today.

The MP for Worsley and Eccles was on the news today reporting that some insurance companies are declining to insure properties for buildings and contents cover around the area because of the risk of subsidence.

All's fair where money is concerned. One local said couldn't they go near Camoron's gaff and drill?
Of course not, Dave has said 'not in my back yard!'

I'm with NickFazer on this one. use fracking until we get our nuclear stations up and running. Its just a shame that all power in this country is owned by foreign companies. When you consider how much damage we've done to the planet, I don't think this will make much difference.

Maybe not on the whole but this is on our doorstep, which is the point.
