Despite Wanderers’ eight game unbeaten run coming to an end against Middlesbrough on Saturday, Andy Lonergan paid tribute to his teammates, backing the Whites to bounce back against Huddersfield on Tuesday evening.

Having entered the fold in the absence of Adam Bogdan in recent weeks, the 30-year-old goalkeeper has enjoyed a fruitful spell between the sticks in Wanderers’ last five outings, keeping two clean sheets in the process.

Although disappointed at the final result at the Riverside however, Lonergan admitted that the performances of late are proof of the camaraderie and determination amongst the squad at present.

"I’ve had quite a few quiet afternoons and I’ve not had too many shots to save recently," he said. "I’ve had quite a few high balls that I feel I’ve dealt with well and I’m feeling really comfortable with the team and especially my defenders.

"They’ve all been magnificent lately and that’s testament to the results we’ve been picking up."

With Grant Leadbitter’s late penalty kick ensuring that Bolton left the north east empty handed, the shot stopper admitted that defeat was hard to swallow given the Whites’ recent run of impressive form, but it is not a result which they will be dwelling on.

"We’re disappointed, obviously - to pretty much control our third away game in a row so comfortably, it’s a bitter blow.

"We did have our chances, but we’ve got to be positive and think that we’re looking like a good team at the minute, especially away from home - we’ve got a game plan and we’re working well.

"It’s a shame that we couldn’t keep our unbeaten run going, but we’ll bounce back."

He added: "We looked at the three games this week and wanted to be greedy by getting all nine points – admittedly that’s not going to happen, but we’ll happily take six points starting with a win against Huddersfield."
